By definition, to qualify to be the smallest 35mm camera counts out
any SLR’s.
This filters the nominee list down to the fixed focal length compact
point and shoots of the world. For travel purposes the focal length of
35mm is the classic length for general use (some have wider). Below I
have listed cameras which are held in high esteem within photographic
circles, (with perhaps the exception of the 10th ranked Ricoh my-1
whose inclusion was courtesy of its diminutive size). Some have become
almost ‘legendary’ like the Olympus XA which set a trend, and Contax
T3 with it's outstanding glass.
I have ranked them roughly in order of lens quality, the sharpest and
best lens is the Carl Zeiss Sonnar on the Contax T3. The top 6 are
metal bodied cameras, some clad in titanium. All top ten are the
smallest of their kind in the world, high performance with some of the
finest lenses. Unfortunately other prestigious point and shoots such
as the Leica Minilux, Nikon 35Ti and Fuji Klasse didn’t make it in the
list as they were too ‘big’
