Hello:
Is Eudora 5.1 your default mail program?
What mail program is launched when you click on a mail to link?

Regards.

yes, eudora's my default mail prog. in IE, clicking a mailto link goes
into eudora, but in netscape, clicking the mailto link launches
netscape mail, which i don't want.

Hello, els24uk:

Do you need to use netscape mail? It seems if Netscape mail is not
installed on the system, Netscape uses the default mail program to
handle mailto links, I'm going to test it thoroughtly but I think this
could be a solution for you.

Regards.

Hello, els24uk:
I confirm that Netscape 7 uses the default mail handler when
Netscape Mail is not installed, I have tested it over a fresh Windows
98 installation and works like a charm. Is this answer useful to you?

Regards.

no, i don't need to ever use netscape mail. i'd uninstall it if i
could, but the uninstall prog only offers the option to completely
remove netscape 7, and netscape doesn't appear in add/remove programs
in the control panel.

going through the setup doesn't let me remove items. should i just
remove all of netscape and reinstall without the option for mail and
IM (which i also don't need)?

Hello:
I'm afraid the answer is yes, you need to uninstall all Netscape 7
and then perform a custom installation installing only the browser.
This will save you some hard disk space, and don't worry, it won't
delete any of your user profiles, so a reinstallation will use your
current ones.

After made the custom installation, check out a mailto: link to see if
Eudora works, I will be here to waitting for the results ;-)

Regards.

Hello, els24uk:
Did my answer work for you? Can you use Eudora as the mailto helper application?

Hello, els24uk:
To reproduce your problem I installed a fresh Windows 98 system and
Netscape 7. As you say, Netscape 7 always uses Netscape mail to handle
mailto: links. After some testing I wasn't able to change this
behaviour, Mozilla 1.0 is able to do it, look at this link:

Can I use a different mail program with Mozilla?
http://www.mozilla.org/start/1.0/faq/mail-news.html#3.3

But, unfortunately, this solution doesn't work on Netscape, there are
two eudora support articles about this matter:

Sending Mail from Netscape
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1860hq.html

Eudora as default mail program interacting with Netscape
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1947hq.html

But the articles are for older versions of Netscape. So the solution
is not to install Netscape Mail, you can do this by uninstalling whole
Netscape and performing a custom installation without Netscape Mail,
that way, Netscape will use your default mail program to handle
mailto: links.

Don't worry about uninstalling Netscape, all your settings and
profiles will remain intact.

I hope this is the information you were looking for and don't hesitate
to request for any clarifications.

I found this within the help files at Netscape's website, for Netscape
7 - perhaps it works for Eudora as well:

You cannot use Outlook or Outlook Express as your default mail
application after de-selecting the "Use Netscape Mail as the default
mail application" setting in the Preferences dialog box. Quit Netscape
if it is running. Workaround: Locate the following files in your
C:\Windows\System directory and delete them: Mapi32.dll and
Mapi32_moz_bak.dll. Then start Outlook or Outlook Express and select
it as the default mail application by choosing Options from the Tools
menu, and clicking the General tab.

If Outlook (not Outlook Express) was previously your default mail
application, and then you choose Netscape Mail as the default mail
application, when you start Outlook it unexpectedly quits or does not
run. Start Netscape. Workaround: Choose Preferences from the Edit
menu, select Mail&Newsgroups, and then de-select "Use Netscape Mail as
the default mail application." Close Netscape and start Outlook. Note:
This will reset Outlook as your default mail application. If you want
to use Netscape Mail to send mail from other applications such as MS
Office applications, you must set Netscape as the default mail
application.
