Hi biggy,

Here are details of some books on the motel business. For each book I
have listed the title, author, a link to the book's entry at
Amazon.com, and an excerpt from the book description at Amazon.com
(from the "editorial review").

Many of these books have user-contributed reviews posted to the Amazon
site, and of course they are also available from many other
booksellers.

The first book that I've listed is written as a textbook for travel
and tourism students, but it covers a wide breadth of subject matter
so I'm including it here as it may be useful.

Hotel/Motel Operations: An Overview (Susanne Weissinger)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0538700130/ref=pd_sim_rm_books/002-8099625-1433611?v=glance&s=books
"A look at the organizational and operational aspects of lodgings. It
covers all departments of a property including front-office operations
such as registration, luggage, room keys, accounting, checking out,
housekeeping, engineering and security, and the food and beverage
department ... methods of marketing a property are explained, and
sections are included on customer relations and dealing with
international visitors."

The next title is about buying a motel. I realize that you are
probably going to build from scratch, but it may still be of interest.

Buying A Motel (Bill R Weaver)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0964796007/qid=1031323602/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14/002-8099625-1433611?v=glance&s=books

Here are two books about developing hotels.

Hotel Design, Planning, and Development (Walter A Rutes, Richard H
Penner and Lawrence Adams)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0393730557/ref=pd_sim_rm_books/002-8099625-1433611?v=glance&s=books
"This book will serve as the 'go-to' guide for architects, planners,
and developers involved in hotel projects. It offers an overview of
the industry; in-depth analysis of emerging trends; the latest how-to;
and essential design, planning, and development criteria."

Developing Hospitality Properties and Facilities (Josef Ransley and
Hadyn Ingram)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0750645547/qid=1031326069/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-8099625-1433611?v=glance&s=books&n=21
"Sets out some key of the key issues in developing hospitality
properties ... looks at design, building issues, and operational
relationships."

Once you've built the motel, you'll need to run it. Here are a couple
of titles about motel operations:

Check-In Check-Out (Gary K Vallen and Jerome J Vallen)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0130829161/qid=1031323528/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-8099625-1433611?v=glance&s=books&n=17
"Complete coverage of the hotel's front office and all of the support
positions that make it work - from the international reservation
network, to legal concerns, sales and marketing techniques, management
issues, room rate formulas, control and oversight."

Hotel and Motel Management and Operations (William S. Gray and
Salvatore Liguori)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/013095795X/qid=1031323528/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_8/002-8099625-1433611?v=glance&s=books&n=17
"Covers all aspects of hotel and motel development, hotel management,
hotel operation, hotel accounting and controls, and the future of the
hotel industry."

Other relevant topics include sales and marketing, and security.

Hotel & Motel Sales, Marketing & Promotion: Strategies to Impact
Revenue & Increase Occupancy for Smaller Lodging Properties (Joe
Wolosz)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0965729893/qid=1031323528/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_2/002-8099625-1433611
"Today's rapidly changing tourist environment is creating many
exciting opportunities for the small lodging property operator.
However, many of these operators are finding it difficult to choose
appropriate marketing strategies they can afford, at the same time
impacting their bottom line. Hotel & Motel Sales, Marketing &
Promotion wades through the complexities of filling guest rooms."

Hotel and Motel Loss Prevention (Harvey Burstein)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0130109096/qid=1031323528/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/002-8099625-1433611?v=glance&s=books&n=17
"Shows how effective security/loss prevention measures help protect
assets, including reputation, against other forms of loss. DLC:
Hotels--Security measures."
