Hi enlightened,
Companies that deliver other people's cars are known as "driveaway
companies".
The people who drive the cars to their destination are mostly leisure
travelers. They pay for their own gas (petrol), but effectively get a
"free" car to transport themselves to their destination.
The driveaway company will set limits on the routes to be taken, and
an overall mileage limit, so there won't be any opportunity to do
significant side-trips - but you'll be able to sightsee attractions
that are close to your line of travel.
There will also be an allotted time, for example it might be eight to
ten days from New York to Los Angeles.
The driveaway concept is well-described at this page from Hostels.com:
Drive Someone Elses Car -- For Free!

You will be driving a car belonging to someone who is willing to pay
to have it moved - so it's quite possible you will be driving a
prestige car such as a BMW or Lexus.
The Independent Traveler website lists several companies offering
driveaways:

More companies can be found in the Yellow Pages, under headings such
as "Autos, Driveaway" and "Automobile Transporters".
The driver doesn't get paid for this kind of driveaway service.
However, there are some companies offering "professional driveaways"
who employ their own staff to do the driving. Free Travel Center sells
a $59 information pack containing contact details for these companies,
but you have to pay your money before you see what you will get:

The Auto Driveaway Co seems to be a good site to start with, for both
leisure and professional driveaways. They have an online list of
available vehicles, and for some of their driveaways they will pay the
fuel cost. There is also an online driver application form, and
details of their career opportunities for paid car transporting work.
