Dear mountain_man,
According to Tibettravel.com, meals (for tourists) cost between 30
(about $3.5 for a light meal) and could get up to 150 RMB in fancy
hotels ($18) <see http://www.tibettravel.com.cn/en/lyzx-eng/advice.htm
- Tibettravel Online-Advice>.
According to another tourist site, Imtrav.com, a light meal costs
around $3 while a dinner costs $7.5 <see
http://www.imtrav.com/download/countrytibet.pdf - TIBET PDF).
BTInternet site gives great info abotu the prices of meals in Tibet.
"China & Tibet are more expensive, except between the border and
Kashgar... Food prices vary hugely. Stay in backpacker cafes with
English menus and you'll pay for the convenience, typically 30Y
[=$3.5-4] for a meal & drinks. Alternatively, 'grunt & point' at the
street stalls and eat like a king for less than a quid!" [=less than
$2]. <http://www.btinternet.com/~peteajones/KKHTibet/costs.htm -
"Cycling the KKH and Tibet with Trackster Man">
To sum up, prices in Tibet vary, but the usual price of meal is
somewhere around $3.5. Of course, it costs less to the Tibetian
native, who probably doesn't eat out.
You can find more information on travel to Tibet in

(Rec-Travel-Asia newsgroup). I also leave my search strategy, which
was to search for the words "cost", "costs" and "price" together with
"tibet" and "meal" (see
://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=cost+OR+costs+OR+price&as_q=tibet+meal).
I think that answered your question. Please contact me if you need any
