I am looking for all the current statistics on PDA market share broken
out by country, by OEM, by total number of devices in the wild....
There's lots of information out there - but I haven't seen anything
that is conclusive. I want to know how many Pocket PCs are out there
and how many Palms, Handsprings... etc.

Hi flashgoirl!

The PDA market is an interesting one with the PalmOS and PocketPC OS
battling it out for marketshare. Add to this the soon-to-be newcomers
like Danger's Hiptop (http://www.danger.com) and the other so-called
SmartPhones (PDA + phone + wireless web), and things will really start
to heat up.

Worldwide PDA sales were forecast to be 16 million units (Palm 46%,
PocketPC 25%), of which 6.6 million were from the U.S. (Palm 72%,
PocketPC 21%).
(http://www.etforecasts.com/pr/pr1201.htm). More recent data shows
that only 13 million units were sold worldwide (PalmOS >51%, PocketPC
+ others 48%). Of the 51% of PalmOS units, Palm accounted for 38.6%
and Handspring accounted for 12.6% of the total market. Of the 13
million units, about half, or 6.5 million, were sold in the U.S. Not
surprising, Compaq saw PDA sales growth to the tune of 175%. Please
read the following article for more in-depth
details(http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/020213/132346_1.html)

In the struggle for control over the European market, these two
articles provide some good data:

http://www.idg.net/english/crd_percent_794425.html

For slightly more than $10, you might consider this report from
EtForecasts:
Worldwide PDA Forecasts Report
(http://www.etforecasts.com/products/wwpda.htm). The executive summary
actually has quite a bit of valuable data
(http://www.etforecasts.com/products/ES_pdas.htm)

I was unable to find PDA sales broken down by country. You may be able
to purchase a report from IDC, Gartner, Forrester, or one of the other
market research companies out there that closely follow the market
trends.

Google Searches used to find data:
Gartner PDA
IDC PDA

Hope this helps to answer your question.

You are correct that the data is hard to find, but I was able to
locate a bunch of 2001 sales information.

In 2001 --

- Palm shipped 5.1 million PDAs, half a million fewer than in 2000
- Handspring shipped 1.6 million PDAs, 200k more than in 2000
- Compaq shipped 1.3 million, an increase in almost a million over
their 2000 sales
- Hewlett-Packard shipped 711,000, up from 442,000 in 2000.

Overall, Palm holds 38.6% of the market, fallen from 50.4% in 2000.

Handspring has 12.6% of the market, from 12.4% the year before.

Compaq's market share surged to 9.8% from 4.2%

HP finished with 5.4% of the market in 2001, up from 4.0% the year
before.

You might want to look at the following article from Advertising Age:
