I've flown a few times in first class and business class on various
airlines (usually American), and found the reading lamps extremely
cool.

The lamp head is usually a rounded conical shape, about 2-3" in
diameter, with a halogen bulb that one turns on and off by twisting a
ring on the head. A flexible connector, covered in rubber, connects
the lamp head to a base that's built-into the seat. The occupant can
thus position the lamp in whatever optimal, 3-D location is preferred,
limited only by the roughly 2-3' length of the flexible connector.

Phone representatives at American Airlines have not been very helpful
in my efforts to find out who manufactures their lamps. I would really
like to find one or more manufacturers of high-quality lamps like
these that are suitable for home use (custom installation assumed).

Hello Inbalance-ga,

Thank you for your question.

The personal reading light that you’re referring to is made by B/E
Aerospace, the leading manufacturer of cabin interior products for
commercial passenger aircraft and business/VIP jets. They manufacture
the personal reading lights that American Airlines uses in first
class.

==============================

“American has also selected B/E to provide business class seating,
first class seating and food and beverage preparation and storage
equipment for a number of aircraft which are on order from Boeing. The
seats chosen by American were developed by B/E to provide the comfort
and ergonomic support of a high-quality recliner. The seats have a
thin profile that provides substantially more passenger living space.
Comfort features include an adjustable headrest, lumbar support and
leg rest. Passengers will enjoy the convenience of an individual
satellite phone, power port and personal reading light built into each
seat.”

LED Interior Lighting:

“B/E Aerospace's revolutionary new LED lighting systems utilize LED
(Light Emitting Diode) technology and microprocessor controls to
provide the same high quality light as traditional B/E systems, with
ten to twelve times longer life than existing products. They also
reduce power consumption by 50% and dramatically reduce heat in the
cabin. The LED system is available in B/E's new LED Reading Light,
Flexible Arm LED reading light, and LED Indirect Wash Lighting.”

“The adjustable overhead LED Reading Light's specially designed lenses
focus the light beam for maximum coverage without disturbing other
passengers. The Flexible Arm LED Reading Light is ergonomically
designed, ruggedly constructed and easily adjusted to place the light
source exactly where it should be for reading or working. The LED
Indirect Wash Lighting's specially designed mounting mechanism directs
the lighting for maximum output and is compatible with any business
jet configuration or application.”
