Question ID: 63061
I want to find and purchase a USB Compact Flash Card Reader that is
compatible with Mac OSX v10.2 (Jaguar).

Clarification of Question by ynrdynr-ga on 10 Sep 2002 11:17 PDT
I currently have a ZiO! CF reader (Microtech & Dazzle seem to be
related companies). OSX won't even recognize it. When I insert a card,
the pop-up sceen message says "you may now safely remove the media"!!

The web site says "drivers for OSX will be available shortly". Isn't
"shortly" a word used to avoid committment? A tentative date would be
far more enlightening and reassuring ... meanwhile, I'm looking for
other hardware.

(Thanks, cogpsych and waffle, for your comments.)

Dazzle's card readers are supposedly compatible with Mac OS 9.0 and
above:

I haven't used one with a Mac, but I have with a PC. Installing and
configuring it at first was a nightmare (i.e., blue screen of death),
but afterwards it seemed to work fine. Perhaps installation would be
easier on a Mac, but I don't know for sure.

According to dealmac.com:

"Staples.com offers the SanDisk ImageMate USB CompactFlash/SmartMedia
reader for $29.99 before a $30 mail-in rebate, $0 after. Shipping
starts at $5."

You can find the product at Staples site:
http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/SKU.asp?BCFlag=False&PageType=1&SKU=489624

I checked SanDisk's Web site - they have downloadable drivers for
MacOS 8.x and 9.x, but it doesn't mention OS X. In my experience,
gadgets like this just work with no special drivers in OS X. Since you
can get it for free (after the rebate) it might be worth taking a
chance.

I hope this helps

The Lexar Media RW011001 Firewire CF Reader works with Jaguar. It
requires that your mac have a firewire port. This site has it for sale
for $32.

To continue my previous comment, examination of this page:
http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=2592
reveals that there are several readers that will work with Jaguar, and
one person claims to have the Dazzle ZiO! product working under Jag as
well.

His comment in that forum is
"I just bought yesterday a Dazzle* CF Card Reader USB for around $20.
You can find the readers @

Okay, and to just make the install process clear, because I screwed up
before: Just remove your old drivers, DON'T reinstall them. Once your
computer is restarted you should be fine.:

I think what he is saying is that support for the Dazzle device is
included with Jaguar, but Jag conflicts with the old Dazzle driver. If
you remove those drivers, and then restart, the Dazzle will work (so
he says).
