Question ID: 63305
To whom should I address my request for the performance rights to the
stage play "Parfumerie" and copies of the script?

Here are the facts I have about the play:
Author: Miklos Lazslo. Original Hungarian title: Illatszertar. English
translation done by Florence Lazslo, in 1957. Library of Congress
identifying number: Du 45048. This is the play on which the MGM film
"The Shop Around the Corner" and the musical "She Loves Me" are based.

MGM did not deign to respond to my inquiry. The Library of Congress
will charge me more for the copyright search than I want to pay.

Hi bonni3,

I wasn't able to find your information but maybe you could try Music
Theatre International: 212-868-6668 (USA). They seem to own the
Musical Rights to "She loves me" (
http://www.mtishows.com/InfoBase/detailslayout.asp?showid=1079 ). It
would be a long distance call for me.

I did this same search and paid the money for the copyright search. I
know I got a flat "no" from the company that owns the rights.

I don't think this is the answer but it might possibly lead you to the
answer. I emailed the publisher of a French translation of "The Shop"
to ask if they had any idea who now had rights to the Laszlos' work
and they gave me this address. But their answer suggests that they
are probably referring to the rights to the French version of "The
Shop" ("La Boutique au Coin de la Rue").
They say that "le propriétaire des droits" is at this address:

Marie Cécile Renauld
Agence Littéraire
23, rue de Choiseul
75002 Paris

I hope she has some information that might help. Good luck.

Karen23-ga: Who was the owner that gave you the flat "no"?
