Hello jd28-ga:

I have been able to find some reports along the lines of what you ask
for. However, to acquire this comprehensive information, you must
purchase the reports. Understandably, given the immense amount of
research that went into them, these reports typically cost upwards of
US$1000.

Would links to and summaries of (as available) these for-purchase
reports be adequate to answer your question?

Thank you. I await your clarification. :-)

Hi jd28-ga:

Thank you for your clarification and your interesting question.
My searching on the Web was able to turn up the following
two comprehensive reports on the music industry. While they
both appear to contain breakdowns by company and genre, each
one has different things to offer you (and, understandably,
different costs involved). If you read up on what's available
in each you will get a much better idea of which ones are worth
the investment to you.

Here is what I was able to find (listed in no particular order):

1. IFPI Recording Industry in Numbers 2001
http://www.ifpi.org/site-content/publications/rin_order.html

By: IFPI
http://www.ifpi.org/index.html

Summary: "This 200-page book is the definitive guide to global
music market information and contains data and comment on 76
markets across all the world's regions. The RIN contains comprehensive
analysis of year 2000 music sales by format and is the first
opportunity to review global analysis on music sales by repertoire,
sales channel, price point, genre and consumer age band...
The RIN is the earliest available, most comprehensive music market
reference guide produced and is an indispensable companion to
anyone interested in knowing about today's global music industry."

Table of Contents:

Cost: GBP400 (that's 400 Great Britain Pounds) which translates
(at today's exchange rates) to about US$625. There will also be
shipping charges from the UK.

Ordering: Instructions can be found at the bottom of the following
page.

2. Music Industry in the 21st Century
http://www.screendigest.com/rep_musiconint.htm

By: Screen Digest
http://www.screendigest.com/home.htm

Summary: "After a decade or more of comfortable growth, the
music industry must now adapt to sales increases that are
consistent with global economic growth. Channels through
which consumers access music proliferate. New carriers are
coming to market DVD Audio and Super Audio CD and, in the
longer term, flash memory. but it remains an open question
whether these will provide enough added value over CD to
tempt consumers into another cycle of product replacement."

Contents Include:
* The global music market
* The new music consumer
* Online business models
* The legal framework
* Copyright protection and digital rights management
* New technology
* Winners & losers
* Corporate profiles of key players
* Lots of accompanying charts in each area

Cost: Hardcopy - US$1595, Electronic - US$3195
