Dear inga-ga,

I have to say, I was extremely surprised at how little specific
information there was to answer your question. It proved to be harder
than I thought to pinpoint gynecologists who advertise a specialty in
treating PMS/PMDD. However, I think I can help you by giving you some
places to start!

The first place I looked to find a complete listing of gynecologists
in California was the American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists at http://www.acog.org/ . I followed the links to find a
physician, and came to the state link at
https://www.acog.com/member-lookup/ . I then selected California,
which came up with a comprehensive listing of the state divided by
city at this page - https://www.acog.com/member-lookup/statequery.cfm?stateid=ca
. From that listing, you can click on the city of your choice. All
ACOG physicians are listed, but only a few have websites. I did not
find any physician that listed PMS or PMDD as a specialty in their
practice description, so I went another route. (I only checked Los
Angeles and Beverly Hills, however) This is not to say that any of
these physicians should be discounted. I would not hesitate to call
them individually. That may take some work, but you will probably find
your most accurate information, or possibly referrals, through a phone
call.

One gynecologist’s name kept popping up in every search for PMS
specialists, although her specialties on the website do not
specifically mention that disorder. However, it is worth a call to her
office.

Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz
8641 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 102
Beverly Hills, California 90211
310-659-6210
310-659-8194 (FAX)
“We offer the full range of obstetric and
gynecologic care to women of all ages
in a compassionate and caring
environment: general gynecology,
preconception and prenatal care,
menopausal medicine, infertility, pelvic
pain and adolescent health.”

An interesting article about PMS and PMDD titled “PMS and PMDD Cause
Serious Suffering,” by A.J.S. Rayl. USA Today (2/18/2000) at
http://www.usatoday.com/life/health/doctor/lhdoc094.htm
says:
“If you live in the Los Angeles area and would like to inquire about
taking part in one of the UCLA studies investigating PMS, call: (310)
825-2452.” Dr. Andrea J. Rapkin, professor of obstetrics and
gynecology at UCLA, in Westwood, Calif., is quoted in the article as
well.
Therefore, for some serious recommendations about gynecologists
specializing in PMS/PMDD, I would recommend contacting the UCLA
Clinical Studies office at the number above. The receptionist may have
some good referrals.

I also recommend contacting Dr. Mary Hardy, medical director at
Cedars-Sinai Integrative Medicine Medical Group in Los Angeles. She
has taken a special interest in PMS, and you can read more about her
particular therapies in the article “Relief for PMS,” by Christie
Aschwanden. WebMD Medical News.(5/22/2000) at
http://my.webmd.com/content/article/1668.50285

If she no longer works there, I would contact the office and ask for
referrals.

Ceders-Sinai Integrative Medicine Medical Group
Ceders-Sinai Hopsital
8700 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA
310-423-9700

Though this is not as much information I had hoped to be able to
give you, I believe the above references will point you to some very
good gynecologists if you pin them down and ask for specifics.

Good luck. And by the way, thank you for your nice comments on my
answer to your previous question. As researchers, we often have little
feedback. Yours was very much appreciated!

Let me know if I can be of further help to you.

Hi,
As far as I know gynecologists rarely treat this disorder. PMS/PMDD is
the area of expertise of other practitioners; mainly psychiatrists or
herbalists. I am open to the type of therapy, except I don’t like
Chinese medicine.

Hello again, inga-ga!

Thank you so much for steering me in a new direction with your
clarification request. I have found some other routes for you to
pursue and I hope they provide you with a doctor or therapist with
whom you are comfortable.

After reading a very interesting article about the new field of
“reproductive psychiatry,” I am inclined to suggest that you call The
Women’s Life Center at The UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital. The Women’s
Center was mentioned in the article titled “When the Bough Breaks.”
Elle. (2002) at http://elle.com/inthemag/articles/article_April.asp
According to their website, “The Women's Life Center at the UCLA
Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital offers a supportive and
effective approach to mental health treatment during the special
phases of a woman’s life (including menstrual phases). The Center
offers individual consultation, group therapy, short-term individual
therapy and medication management. These services are provided by the
Center's skilled interdisciplinary team of psychiatrists,
psychologists and social workers who are supervised by faculty with
special expertise in women's mental health. In order to provide
comprehensive health care, the Center's staff works closely with
referring clinicians from a number of other medical specialties.”
The website and contact information for the Women’s Life Center is at
http://www.npi.ucla.edu/wlc/womenx.htm .

According to the article “Depression in the Childbearing Years.” The
Female Patient.:
“Several university centers are conducting studies to better
understand the nature and treatment of depressive disorders in women.
For more information about these studies on premenstrual dysphoric
disorder, depression in pregnancy, postpartum depression,
perimenopausal depression, and other aspects of depression in women,

“Dr. Deacon has developed for the practice two specialized
programs which are of particular interest to her. First is the
Neurofeedback Training program. Brain wave training has proved
remarkable effective in the treatment of numerous conditions. Most
discussion of this important technique has focused on Attention
Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, but Dr. Deacon is particularly
interested its its application to such health issues as high blood
pressure and PMS. In 1995 Sharon added 120 hours of training to her
already busy schedule in order to provide this program. She is now
considered a Diplomate in Neurofeedback.”

certain symptomatologies caused by brain injuries, Attention Deficit
Disorder, High Blood Pressure, PMS and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, etc.”
See Dr. Ibric’s website at

I do hope that these references will give you some more options.
Again, even with thorough research along some different lines, there
were few sources available online. However, any one of these clinics
should be able to refer you to some other therapists in the Los
Angeles area.

Good luck and good health! And....thank you very much for your
patience!

Hi Inga,

Generally, with PMS/PMDD sufferers the first point of contact is with
a gynecologist. A subsequent referral would usually be made through
your GYN to a Ph.D. psychologist or a psychiatrist, if necessary, once
a needs assessment is done.

My colleague, umiat, mentioned Andrea Rapkin, M.D. at UCLA. She is
doing studies with the oral contraceptive, Yasmin, for this diagnosis.
You can read about it here:
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2001-08/pn-nss082201.php

It seems the expert in this field is Kimberly Yonkers of Yale
University, but you'll find a listing of specialists, several at UCLA,
in this document:

Best of luck to you,
V
