Good Day,
Your first step is to get into your web space. Most Internet
providers give you some web space for free with your access purchase.
To get into your web space you will need an FTP (File Transfer
Protocol) program such as CuteFTP 30 day free trail can be found at
http://www.globalscape.com/products/cuteftp/index.asp) or FTP
Commander (older versions if you can find them are free, the current
version which is a 30 day trial as well and can be found at
http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpnav.htm). You probably will find a lot
more other FTP software if you go to a place like www.tucows.com and
do a search for FTP.
Once you have the software installed call your Internet provider, and
tell them you want to upload your web site into your space. The
reason I say call them is because a lot of internet providers do not
give the free space until you tell them you want it. The Internet
provider?s official web site might have more information too.
Once you know your space is set-up on the other side, you will need to
know an ftp address into which you have to connect with your FTP
program, your user ID and password.
With that set-up, you will click connect, and the login will begin.
Once connected you will see the FTP program show you file directory
structures, one on the left and one on the right. Generally the left
side is your computer, this is where you find and highlight the files
you want. Now send them to the right side to place them on the web
server. The right side is the remote host (web server).
There are a few other things that might be required for you to do in
order for the world to be able to access the pages. Things like file
permissions. Again, these are the things you would find out from any
half decent Internet provider. If not, here is a web address with
some links to teach you more about FTPing in case you find little
support from your internet provider:

Search engines are a little trickier. You are at the mercy of the
people who maintain the indexes for listing, and your position in the
result will depend a lot on your META Tags. Meta tags specify a web
page's description, key words, etc. To find out more how to insert
Meta tags into your web page, visit
http://nfib.smallbusiness.com/89/sb/advice/display/13277/
Not all search engines require Meta tages, but with them you are going
to be listed higher in most cases.
To submit a web site you would go to a search engine and look for a
link called something like "suggest a web site", or "add your url".
You will be asked what your web page address is, and possibly a few
other questions. Click submit, and you are done.
Actually getting listed in a search engine can take a few months,
depending on the search engine and the traffic they are experiencing.
A lot of search engines are charging for premium listings, and some
don't even offer a free listing anymore. Still, you can get into them
by submitting you web site to a place like www.dmoz.org, which is an
open directory project. A lot of search engines get their content
from dmoz.org (including the fine folks at Google)!
So, now that you have got an ear full, I hope you will be able to
accomplish what you set out to do!
