Dear drbarlow-ga

The most significant event is what only can be described as the
beginning of modern America. On May 14, 1607, the English Virginia
Company explorers landed on Jamestown Island, to establish the
Virginia colony on the banks of the James River. It was to be the
first successful English settlement in the Americas. However, the
early days of the colony were fraught. They found a hostile
environment that probably would have destroyed the colony, but for the
leadership of Captain John Smith, who managed to organize and motivate
the settlers and save them from starvation. New supplies arrived in
1610 and from 1614 survival was assured thanks to tobacco planting.

I recommend two sites:
Settlement of Jamestown – an account by Captain John Smith

and

Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities' Jamestown
Rediscovery archaeological project. Jamestown Rediscovery is
investigating the remains of 1607-1698 Jamestown on the APVA property
on Jamestown Island, Virginia.

Just the type of question I like: history - who says there’s no future
in it?
