Question ID: 6468
I own two handhelds, a Palm m505 and a Sony Clie N610C. Both use the
same operating system. However, each uses its own cradle via USB port.
I own one PC. How can I HotSync both handhelds off the one
computer/one operating system? Each attempt has failed to hotsync the
Sony. The Palm 505 hotsyncs just fine.Palm OS 4.0

It would help to know exactly what happens when you try to hotsync. Do
you get an error message? What does it say?

Additionally, it would help to know if you are trying to sync both
your Palm and Clie to the same user.

When I attempt to HotSync the Clie, I get nothing. The Clie's screen
reads (after a brief wait) that it could not establish a connection.
Also, I noticed the Clie's screen said "Welcome," but no name. Also,
FYI, PC operates on enhanced Windows98. When I re-connect the Palm -
after attempting to HotSync the Clie, I have noticed that it (the
Palm) takes longer to establish a connection than it does when in
repeated use.

Regarding the same user issue, I have no idea how to input the name
option into the Clie. The palm knows who I am, so the OS never asks.

Dear Filllmalot,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Here, I believe, is your answer. It is taken from the Sony support
website at:

http://ciscweb.sel.sony.com/scripts/web_access.cgi?FUNC=SOLUTION_DETAIL&SOL_ID=7890

**Note this is taken from the Sony website and not from the Palm
website, thus, there are no guarantees of the effects to your Palm
m505. A search in the Palm Knowledgebase did not yield any pertinent
information. Your best bet may be to contact support for either Palm
or Sony.

This answer requires that you change your Sony Clie user name if it is
the same as the one on your Palm. To do this, go to page 115 of your
Sony Clie Operating Manual or go to (this file is in PDF format):

ftp://ftp.ita.sel.sony.com/ccpg/handheld/docs/OPERN610C.PDF

and go to Chapter 3. Click on “Performing a local HotSync,” which is
on page 114. “How to change your user name” is on page 115 and it is
about halfway down the page. I think this same method will work for
creating a user name.

Sony Support Answer

Description:
Can The Palm OS Handheld And Sony CLIE Handheld Be Used On The Same
Computer With Palm Desktop For Sony Software?

Solution:

If Palm Desktop for Sony is used to synchronize with more than one
organizer, assign a unique name to each organizer.

!!WARNING: Synchronizing more than one organizer with the same user
name causes unpredictable results and potential loss of personal
information. Only use the same user name when transferring all data
from one Palm OS(R) organizer to another.

Follow the steps provided below to convert Palm or Handspring Visor
Desktop data for use with Sony Palm Desktop.

NOTE: If the Palm Desktop for Sony is installed without uninstalling a
previous version of Palm Desktop, the installation will fail.

1. Synchronize the old Palm device once with the existing version of
Palm Desktop to backup all the data.

2. Use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the existing version of Palm
Desktop.

3. Locate the Palm Desktop folder and copy the remaining user folders
to a temporary location.

4. Delete the old Palm Desktop folder.

NOTE: If all software from a Visor installation is not completely
removed, USB will not be supported and the Sony CLIE(TM) handheld will
not HotSync.

5. Install Palm Desktop for Sony.

A. Insert the Installation CD into the CDROM drive.

NOTE: If the Personal Entertainment Organizer installation program
does not appear automatically, double-click My Computer, then
right-click the icon of your CD drive and select AutoPlay.

B. Click "Install Palm Desktop for Sony."

C. At the "Welcome" window, click Next to begin the Palm Desktop for
Sony setup.

D. At the "Software License Agreement" window, click Yes.

E. At the "Setup Type" window, click Next to install the Typical
Setup.

F. At the "Create User Account" window, enter the user name to be used
to identify the handheld as well as to serve as the user ID on the
Palm Desktop for Sony and then click Next.

!!WARNING: Synchronizing more than one organizer with the same user
name causes unpredictable results and potential loss of personal
information. It is strongly recommended to use the same user name for
the old Palm device as used previously for that device. Use a
different user name for the Sony CLIE handheld.

NOTE: If a Microsoft(R) Excel macro error appears, click Next.

G. At the "HotSync operation Warning" box, click OK.

H. At the "Perform Mail Setup?" window, click Yes to configure mail
settings.

I. At the "Mail Setup" window, click the down arrow to select the
e-mail program currently being used and then click Next.

NOTE: If the Microsoft(R) Outlook(R) application is selected but not
installed, a Mail Setup message will appear. Click No to select
another program or Yes create a profile for Outlook if one does not
yet exist. If a message appears indicating that MAPI must be
configured, follow the instructions to synchronize that email
application.

J. At the "Congratulations" screen, click Next to synchronize the mail
program.

K. At the "Setup Complete" window, establish an internet connection or
remove the check mark from the "Proceed to customer registration" box,
then click Finish.

IMPORTANT: The Sony handheld must be registered to take advantage of
the 9 month extended limited warranty for a total of 12 months from
the date of purchase.

L. Click Exit to close the Personal Entertainment Organizer
installation program.

6. Copy the user folders from the temporary location to the new Sony
Palm Desktop location. The default location is C:\Program Files\Sony
Handheld.

NOTE: A message may appear indicating that a duplicate folder or
directory already exists. Click Yes to All to proceed.

7. Perform a HotSync(R) operation to transfer all user data.

NOTES:

* Palm Desktop for Sony and Palm Desktop both appear in the Add/Remove
Program as Palm Desktop.

* Do not use TrueSync(TM) software to synchronize one organizer using
Serial sync and another using USB sync on the same computer.

* Sony does not support installing Palm Desktop for Sony software over
an existing version of Palm Desktop.

You can input the name into both of them by going to the Prefs
application, then choosing Owner from the pop-up menu.

All of the information provided was identical to that which I had
obtained directly from Sony Support. Their suggested procedures did
not work, nor did the respondedt's. Sorry. I have purchased a second
computer: problem solved.
