Hello graymagic77,

And thank you for your question.

I believe that your system has been "infected" with some "spyware" and
the program you are referring to is actually "cmesys.exe".

A quick look over at http://www.greatis.com/regrun3useless.htm, the
Greatis Registry Run application database shows this as:

"cmesys.exe

Advertising spyware. The part of the Gator (http://www.gator.com) ..."

I followed the link over to www.gator.com and found the following
information:

"Gator E-wallet fills in forms with no typing...

Remembers passwords with no typing..

...the Gator eWallet and OfferCompanion are ad supported software."

So, this totally confirms that this is a program that has little value
other than to provide advertising on your computer and perhaps send
information about your web surfing habits back to the program's
authors.

Answers that Work at
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_c.htm , says
this about Gator:

"Background program which is part of the Gator GAIN software (Gator
Advertising and Information Network). Gator GAIN is what we call
adware (advertising spyware). Gator GAIN is used by software
manufacturers to enable them to offer you the FREE use of their
software – instead, they receive advertising revenue through the
advertisements displayed by the Gator GAIN add-on whenever you are
using their software.

Recommendation :

We are against all adware. Download Ad-Aware from our Downloads area
and use it to remove Gator and any other adware or spyware. Note,
however, that in some cases removing adware will totally disable the
application which installed it, and this maybe an application which is
important to you, so you may want to initially only disable this with
Startup Manager while you ascertain how Gator Gain got into your PC."

And I could not agree more with their assessment of "adware" and their
recommendation for Lavasoft's Ad-Aware removal program.

Ad-Aware is available at www.lavasoft.de and is a **free** utility
that is constantly being updated much like an Anit Virus program and
the update of new virus definitions. I have been using it for several
years now and it has performed flawlessly in keeping my computers
adware free.

Another good article on Gator and AD-Aware appears here at Tech-TV:
http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/howto/story/0,24330,3389395,00.html
.

"Gator is a program that bills itself as the ultimate tool for helping
you fill out Web forms. It automatically senses when you've arrived at
a Web form and it completes it with the click of a mouse. But, as
Roger and Chris will tell you on today's episode of "Call for Help,"
Gator is really nothing more than insidious spyware. "

They continue with complete instructions as follows:

Get rid of Gator

"You may not have realized it at the time of installation, but many
popular file-sharing programs install Gator. If you don't mind Gator
on your system and actually find it useful, then there's no reason to
remove it. Just remember that it's your privacy and bandwidth that'll
be compromised. On the other hand, if you don't like being bombarded
with ads while you go about your business on the Internet, then it's
time to take the bite out of Gator.

Removing Gator isn't hard, but it requires downloading a program
called Ad-aware. This program scours your computer inside and out,
checking for any known spyware or "adware" components. Ad-aware gives
you the option to delete anything it finds and remove it from your
system.

Once you install Gator on your system it slowly begins to download the
rest of its components from a remote server. For this reason, Gator
may or may not show up in your Add/Remove Programs dialog box. But
that box is still the best place to start.

Here's how to remove Gator using the Add/Remove Programs dialog box:

Single-click the Start Menu, mouse over Settings, and then
single-click the Control Panel.

Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

Locate "Gator eWallet" and click on it.

Click the Remove button.

The next step is to download and install Ad-aware (if you didn't
already). Ad-aware will clean up any leftover pieces or allow you to
remove it in its entirety if it didn't show up in the Add/Remove
Programs dialog box.

Here's how to use Ad-aware to remove Gator:

Launch Ad-aware.

Under "Sections to scan," place a check mark next to My Computer.

Single-click the "Scan now" button.

If Gator was removed from your computer already, then you should have
about five remaining entries to delete. If it's still installed on
your system, then Ad-aware should find about 50 or more entries to
delete.

Place check marks next to each entry marked "Gator."

Single-click the Continue button.

Click OK."

I hope this has been helpful and informative for you. Please don't
hesistate to ask if I can clarify anything above for you.

Best regards,

a name fit for a great french detective that took the time out to
unravel this puzzle, and what to do with it. Thank you very much for
your informative answer and a very different approach, it was thorough
without becoming tiresome. Will look forward to having more questions
for you to fathom out. Sincerely, Kenneth Wilson
