I would like to know who is responsible for this quote, or a very
similar phrase with the same sentiment: "travel is consolation for
fools". I think I heard or read it around 1980.

Dear Jeff,

Normally, we researchers are not supposed to use clarification
requests to float "trial balloons," but in a case such as this, where
you indicate that you may accept "a similar phrase," it is difficult
for us to know whether we've found something similar enough.

I have turned up an interesting short quotation about travel as
essentially an imaginary process "for fools." However, it is not
word-for-word the quote that you give; the word "consolation" does not
appear in the quote that I have found.

If this quote, and a link to its source on the Web, would suffice as
an answer, I would be glad to provide same. If not, other researchers
can continue the search.

Best regards,
~pinkfreud

pinkfreud: is the sentiment similar to consolation? I'm not sure
what could be meant by imaginary travel. If the quote you found has
the word 'imaginary' in it then I am sure it is not the correct one.

Thank you for responding so quickly.

Ah, well, not all trial balloons will fly, but it's sometimes worth
floating them anyway. ;-)
