Hi, I have a 4-year old iMac, and its Internal Modem stopped working. I bought a new external modem. I cannot get it to work. Nor can the local Mac dealer. He tested my iMac and it is fine. The modem is brand new (Zoom 56K USB Faxmodem). When I go to the modem settings menu of the iMac, it does not offer me external modem, just internal modem. The modem guide says it does work with iMacs. Do you know how to change the settings of such an old iMac to internal modem? As I already spent a lot of money on this, and still cannot use it, please only answer if you are confident. I welcome your guesses as "comments". Thanks, Miklos | |

As my colleague rmn-ga points out, you need to obtain the proper driver, if it was not included with your modem. (If the modem's packaging included a floppy disk or CDROM, you may find an appropriate driver there.) Once you've installed your driver, this newsgroup post may be helpful: http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=1ffysbr.zlipzy1pfmvwiN%40%5B192.168.0.170%5D&oe=UTF-8&output=gplain |

Dear Colleagues, thanks for your comments. The new modem came with an Installation CD-Rom, and I used it to install the modem. I am sorry I do not understand what "Drivers" you are referring to. Could you please elaborate on that one? The modem is brand new, so I assume it has the latest stuff on the installation disk). Thanks again, Miklos |

Go to the modem manufacturer's Web site and then to the software section of that site. Download the Macintosh drivers for that modem. Drivers are the software the Mac uses to talk to the modem. Also, check to see if there is a "firmware upgrade" for that modem model. If so, download and install that, too. Getting the drivers and firmware from the Web site is preferable to using the CD-ROM, because the Web site may have a more recent, better version of the driver. |

- 1. 'Maybe' you plugged in the modem after you started the iMac. You need to start the iMac when the modem is plugged in to the iMac. - 2. Or you plugged in your modem into the keyboard USB port which does not have enough power. You need to plug it into the USB port on the computer, and restart. Problem solved? regards lot-ga |

Dear All, thanks for all comments. I called the manufacturer of the modem and they said that I need at least MAC OS 8.6 to operate this modem, and I currently only have MAC 0S 8.0. I am hoping this will solve everything. Miklos |
