Greetings! From what I have researched on three sites selling
authentic Tony Lama boots, the numeric sizes of that shoe line are
followed by letter widths such as 7B in women's sizes or 7D in men's
sizes. If your boots read W7 it is possible they are a women's size 7
or they may be a counterfeit Tony Lama product.
The stores I located on the Tony Lama site are located west of me and
have not yet opened for business today. However, the telephone
numbers for all three of the authorized dealer stores are toll-free,
so you may call at your convenience and ask a saleperson how the Tony
Lama sizes read inside an actual boot they sell:
Sheplers -- Wichita, KS -- 1-800-835-4004
Drysdales -- Tulsa, OK-- 1-800-444-6481
Boot Barn -- Anaheim, CA-- 1-888-440-BOOT
In most quality footwear, the way to tell the difference between men's
and women's shoe sizes is by the letter appearing after the size
number.
In women's shoes, the letters used to denote width are A, B and C, and
in men's sizes the letters D and E are used. In men's widths, the
letters are repeated to denote wider shoes like DD or EEE. In women's
sizes, A is the only letter often repeated like AA or AAA, more
slender sizes.
However, some shoe manufacturers use the letters N, M, W and WW to
denote Narrow (A), Medium (B), Wide (W) and Double W (WW) in women's
shoes, but these usually always follow the number size, not come
before it.
Generally, a man's shoe is 1.5 times larger in the same size as a
woman's shoe. For instance, I wear a men's size 5 to 5 1/2 and a
woman's 6 1/2 to 7.
There is a link below to a comprehensive measurement chart under the
title "Determining your shoe size" offered by The Sports Authority
Coach's Corner. When you visit that chart, you will see exact numeric
figures for each measurement. I tried to copy and paste it here for
you but the chart didn't read correctly in this program.
However, all shoe makers are different so it's always best to try on
shoes before purchasing, unless you have already worn the brand and
know your size in that brand. Very cheap shoes are sometimes larger
than their indicated size by 1/2 size and very expensive shoes are
sometimes 1/2 size smaller than their indicated size.
This has been a very interesting question to research! I hope this
information is of assistance and should you need a clarification,
please ask.
