I use Outlook 2000 SR-1 in Windows 98 on a Dell Latitude CSx. When I am in "Contacts," if I right-click on a contact and choose "New message to contact," the computer opens up a new window, as appropriate, to let me write an email. However, when I choose send, I get the following: "Outlook Update Error - The database cannot be opened using the information provided. Check to see if your username and password are correct." It then gives me an "OK" button to press, but each time I press, the same error message comes up, until I have to hit ctrl-alt-delete. In the past, I have been able to send email this way, and I can't think of anything obvious I've done to change it. I am not tremendously computer savvy, so please make your answer step-by-step. Thanks. --Dan |

Hi there, The results of our search are shown below: According to Microsoft, this message occurs when you have corrupted COM add-ins installed within Outlook 2000. This is even more likely to occur when you have the small business customer manager installed as one of your add-ins. I wasn't able to determine whether or not Outlook is stable once you've opened it, so I provide both sets of options: Case 1 - Access to Outlook can be gained: What you will be doing here is removing your add-ins through Outlook 1. Start Outlook, and then on the Tools menu, click Options . 2. Click the Other tab, and then click Advanced Options . 3. Click COM Add-Ins . 4. Click the appropriate add-ins, and then click Remove . Case 2 - Cannot gain access to Outlook: If you are unable to remove the add-ins through Outlook, we will need to remove them using the registry editor: Quit all programs. 1. Click Start on the taskbar, and then click Run . 2. In the Open box, type regedit.exe . 3. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\SBCM.Addin.1 Detailed information about the add-ins appears under Data . If the FileName value data is path \Sbcmsync.dll , double-click the LoadBehavior value and then change the value data to 2 . 4. On the Registry menu, click Exit . 5. Restart your computer, and then restart Outlook. This and more information on this process is located here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q296443 Please note that Microsoft seems to also be pointing a finger at 3rd party utilities and virus scanners that are loaded automatically on startup, so make sure that if you have any of these that they are disabled. For more information on how to do this go here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q270035 Hope this was helpful! answerguru | |

Thanks. I may wait before trying this, as sometimes solutions cause more problems than the problems themselves. But I'm going to keep your answer on file. |

Read over: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q296443 check and see if you possibly have an add-in that is causing the problem. I would also recommend installing the the Microsoft Office 2000 Update: Service Pack 2 (SP-2): http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/SP2upd.aspx . This update fixes many of the common issues with Office 2000 SR-1. |

In addition to the possibility that it is an add-in that is causing the problem, it would be a good idea to run the "Detect and Repair Office" utility. This can be accessed from the Help drop down within Outlook. You can also reinstall Office by going to your Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs. When you choose Office, you should get options such as repairing Office or reinstalling Office. Often this will fix problems with corrupt COM or .dll files. Don't worry about existing contacts or Office files being damaged, they are kept seperately from all the install files. Good luck |
