I am in need of a specific kind of mental health therapy. I am married
and have 6 children. Three months ago my husband asked me to leave
because our life together is impossible because of me. I have been
diagnosed as being an extreme narcissist but the 5 psychiatrists I
have been to have been unable to help me. I need a doctor who is able
to put me under either sodium pentathol or sodium amnytol, in order to
bypass my conscious mind and access my sub-conscious. I will then need
a doctor who is a licensed medical physician (paid by Ontario Health
Insurance Plan) to help me sort out and deal with, whatever I discover
under pentathol or amnytol. I live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and
I understand that I may have to travel in order to get the drug
therapy. I have tried to find this help on my own, but have been
unsuccessful.
I need help. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hallo annie8,

after looking into NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), I have to
ask you why you want to take "Truth Drugs"? Was this suggested to you
by a doctor?

First, you should be aware that those "Truth Drugs" are not really
that effective - especially in a person with a high degree of
"inventiveness". They rather allow the asker (in that case the doctor
you are looking for) to guide you to a certain subject you might
otherwise avoid. There is no guarantee though that you would actually
tell the truth to the doctor under these drugs. You might actually
feel that you NEED to give the doctor a specific answer which is not
the truth.

Second, I didn't find any scientific relationship between NPD
treatment and the drugs you stated. In fact the treatment suggested by
the sources I found was talk therapy. Drug related treatment - as far
as the sources I have checked so far - is not usefull with NPD.

I also found a long FAQ, detailing for example, why NPD sufferers have
problems finding "the right" therapist. It it thought of as a defense
mechanism of the illness itself.

If you want more in depth information about your illness and
specialists in your region, you might want to reformulate your
question. If you want to continue to search for drug therapy though,
you might want to give us a source suggesting this treatment (and if
you were told, the reasoning behind it), so we can integrate this
information into our searches.

There are self help groups avaiable to everyone for these disorders.
Check your local Telephone Directory for the Dept. of Human Resources
and or Substance Abuse. They have listings as to when these groups
meet nearest to you. If low income some even provide transportation
and babysitting assistance. They usually are listed in the front of
the Directory under Resouces and have 800 toll free numbers. If you
require further professional treatment a Psychiatrist is the one to
see as he can usually order some of the newer medications for these
disorders, as well as talk therapy. There are new antidepressant
drugs that have been useful with Obsessive disorders. " There is
light at the end of the tunnel "!

Dear Annie8,

The Narcissistic Personality Disorder is never treated with drugs, let
alone the drugs you mentioned. Medication may be used to ameliorate
certain behaviors, such as obsessive thoughts, compulsive acts and
certain moods, such as depression. But the core problem of
pathological narcissism is not amenable to psychopharmacological
treatment.

All of us have narcissistic TRAITS. Some of us even develop a
narcissistic PERSONALITY. Moreover, narcissism is a SPECTRUM of
behaviours - from the healthy to the utterly pathological (known as
the Narcissistic Personality Disorder, or NPD).

The DSM IV-R defines NPD thus:

"An all-pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behaviour),
need for admiration or adulation and lack of empathy, usually
beginning by early adulthood and present in various contexts."

So, what matters is that these characteristics, often found in healthy
people, appear:

1. Jointly and not separately or intermittently
2. They are all-pervasive (invade, penetrate, and mould every aspect,
nook, and cranny of the personality)
3. That grandiose fantasies are abundantly discernible
4. That grandiose (often ridiculous) behaviours are present
5. That there is an over-riding need for admiration and adulation
("narcissistic supply")
6. That the person lacks empathy (regards other people as two
dimensional cartoon figures and abstractions, unable to "stand in
their shoes")
7. That all these phenomena began, at the latest, in early adolescence
8. That the narcissistic behaviours pervade all the social and
emotional interactions of the narcissist.

Here are the DSM-IV-R criteria of the Narcissistic Personality
Disorder.

Having 5 of these 9 "qualifies" you as a narcissist...

Feels grandiose and self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements
and talents to the point of lying, demands to be recognized as
superior without commensurate achievements)

Is obsessed with fantasies of unlimited success, fame, fearsome power
or omnipotence, unequalled brilliance (the cerebral narcissist),
bodily beauty or sexual performance (the somatic narcissist), or
ideal, everlasting, all-conquering love or passion

Firmly convinced that he or she is unique and, being special, can only
be understood by, should only be treated by, or associate with, other
special or unique, or high-status people (or institutions)

Requires excessive admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation -
or, failing that, wishes to be feared and to be notorious
(narcissistic supply).

Feels entitled. Expects unreasonable or special and favourable
priority treatment. Demands automatic and full compliance with his or
her expectations
Is "interpersonally exploitative", i.e., uses others to achieve his or
her own ends

Devoid of empathy. Is unable or unwilling to identify with or
acknowledge the feelings and needs of others

Constantly envious of others or believes that they feel the same about
him or her

Arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitudes coupled with rage when
frustrated, contradicted, or confronted.

The language in the criteria above is based on or summarized from:

manual of mental disorders, fourth edition (DSM IV-R). Washington, DC:
