I am looking for the most recent incidence rate of amputations to use
in an Human Subjects Committee application form. I am a psychology
graduate student planning on studying the psychological effects of
amputation. My trouble is that I would like to state the annual
incidence rate of amputations in the US (doesn't have to be in the
last year, can be a couple of years old statistic), but all of the
information that I find breaks the amputations down into cause
(vascular degneration, trauma, etc.), and I would like an overall
statistic.

Hello Aviendra,

According to the fact sheet “LIMB LOSS IN THE UNITED STATES” By the
NLLIC and the Limb Loss Research and Statistics Program (LLR&SP)
Reviewed 2002, there are about 185,000 amputations in the U.S. a year.

The excerpt from the above article:

INCIDENCE:
“There are approximately 185,000 amputation related hospital
discharges each year in the U.S.”

The Amputee Coalition Website

Two additional excerpts from other articles with amputation
statistics:

“According to the National Center for Health Statistics 1996 study,
there are approximately 200,000 new amputees in the U.S. every year,
of which approximately 70% are lower limb amputees.”
Otto Bock Orthopedic Industry Website

“Each year, more than 150,000 persons join the ranks of over 4 million
existing amputees in the US.”
