Wow, this was tougher than I expected! It is easy to find grid paper
with 1/4 inch squares and smaller, but 1/2 inch grids seem to be
extremely rare.
I have seen this type of paper in local crafts stores for use by
quilters and beadcrafters; if you would like to find a brick & mortar
store that sells 1/2 inch quadrille paper, you might want to try
places like Hobby Lobby and Michael's (these are large chain stores
that sell crafters' materials and art supplies.) I had expected that
online art supply stores might carry this paper, but I checked more
than a dozen of them, and struck out.
I have found one online source for you. This is a company that
specializes in school supplies for the blind and visually-impaired.
The graph paper that they offer is bold-line style, so that it can be
seen by those with low vision conditions. I would think this would be
ideal for use by youngsters, regardless of their visual acuity.
Bold-Line Graph Sheets, 8 1/2 x 11 inches, sold in packages of 100
sheets:
1/2-inch squares in a 15 x 20 grid with coordinate axes: 1-04061-00
($10.00)
The same site also has bargraph-style paper and larger format grid
paper (11 1/2 x 11 inches.)
They appear to have this item in stock, as I was able to go through
the ordering process all the way up to the point where the customer is
asked to enter a credit card number.

My search strategy consisted of various combinations of "1/2 inch,"
"half inch," "2 x 2," "quadrille paper," "graph paper," and "grid
paper."
If I come across any other online sources of this type of paper, I
will let you know. Please ask for clarification if anything in my
answer is not clear, or if the link does not function.
Best wishes,
