Find information on Countess Zola Waloska living in guildford and
running a girls' school in a house called glebefields 1905-1909

Greetings:

Countess Zola Waloska was one of the earliest staff members of what
has become the Tormead School. Tormead School is an independent school
for girls still located in Guildford, Surrey, England. Tormead's
location as a girls' school in Guildford identified it as a possible
resource for information on Waloska. The individual serving as head of
History at Tormead School was kind enough to reply via e-mail and
supply information. I'm pleased to relay that information to you as an
answer to your request.

Tormead School does trace its history back to 1905 in the house called
Glebefields at Lower Edgeborough Road in Guildford. My contact notes
the 1906 Guildford Directory documenting a "Comtesse Z. Waloska" in
residence, indicating the probability of her being there in 1905.
Waloska was also entered as resident in the 1907, 1908, and 1909
editions of the same directory. In that time frame Countess Waloska
was in charge of what was a fledgling private day school for girls,
and it was part of a chain of schools operated by a company that
employed Waloska to the school at Glebefields. By late 1909 a Mrs.
Kitto arrived to take over Waloska's duties at Glebefields. At least
two former students from the school's days at Glebefields have
remembered their education there in memoirs, but they did not refer to
Waloska personally in their writings.

Countess Waloska's early work at Glebefields is an enduring historical
accomplishment because the school she led continues as Tormead School.
In 1910 the school relocated to a house called Southfield. In 1912 it
relocated again to another house called Glencroft. Then in 1915 the
school moved into Tormead, where it remains. The Glebefields house no
longer stands, but a small stone now commemorates its location. The
head of History at Tormead School is currently researching the
school's past in preparation for the institution's centennial. The
school and contact is similarly interested in the person of Countess
Zola Waloska. The school may serve as at least a new lead and
potentially as an ongoing resource for further information on Waloska
as the year 2005 approaches.

In the interest of privacy I have only referred to my contact by the
title as head of History at Tormead School, keeping the specific name
and e-mail address out of public dissemination. However, the school
and contact can be reached through its website:

understanding my discretion in this regard.

I hope this helps,

jeanbrenda-ga:

How odd. I will do what I can to add to this in some way that takes
your knowledge beyond itself. This indeed happened by chance. I
certainly intended to do more than be thrwarted our own anonimity.

it was quite a good answer but unfortunately your researcher by chance
contactedthe person who had placed the question so the answer did not
add any more to my knowledge.
