Every time I run defrag in Windows 200 pro there are three files that
do not defrag. This consequently schedules a disk check on the next
startup. I would like to know what this error is telling me and how
can I fix it?

Hi,

If you are not comfortable with the procedure I posted earlier, here
are some alternative disk optimisation programs.

You can try using Norton Speed Disk from Norton Systemware 2002 or
2003. If it works for you and you are interested in buying it, I
suggest you go for the latest. This has Windows XP support too so you
will not be left with an unusable software if you upgrade to XP in
future.

2. RAXCO Perfect Disk 2000 is another option. You can download a trial
here.

Please try defragmenting your computer with any of the above. If you
still have problems, please revert back to me.

hi russ0836,

You had not written that you had already used Diskeeper! There was no
way I could have known.

Looking at the three files, one catches my attention:

\Program Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\Cache\fat.db [Excess
Allocation]

This is a Netscape Messenger file. Please compact all your Netscape
mail folders. Then run defrag once again. If the problem still
persists, you may need to export your mail from 'Russel Phillips' id
and close/erase the ID. Now run defrag. If it finishes okay, create
your identity in Netscape mail once again and import your messages.

The problem is most probably due to one or more messages in your mail.

Hi,
i am getting a strong feeling that the culprit is your mail account in
netscape... your point about the common files is true - these are log
files.

let me think it over once again and i will post you in a while...

\Program Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\Cache\fat.db [Excess
Allocation]
\Documents and Settings\rphillip\ntuser.dat.LOG [Excess Allocation]
\WINNT\system32\config\default.LOG
\WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG
\Program Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\netscape.hst [Excess
Allocation]
\WINNT\security\logs\scepol.log

of these files, the log files are logs kept of various components of
the system. These are just logs - lists of events. There is a way to
clear the event logs. Please check the Administrative tools in NT.
Clearing logs will not affect your system in any way. Once cleared, i
am sure defrag will work!

This time, I don't see the Netscape file in the list. Is it gone?

hi,

It would help me if I knew what these three files were. Anyway you can
try this.

If you know the file names and their locations (you can get this from
the report after the defrag), make copies of them with different
names. Erase the original files. Maintain a record of their locations
and original names. Now run defrag once again. This time defrag should
work through. Then rename the files and return them to their original
locations.

If this works out for you, please post a comment here and I will post
it as an answer! Else, I will look for another solution, in which
case, please send me the names and locations of the files in question.

Warm regards

I already use Diskeeper Lite. I used it and gave you the output yesterday.

Hi,

Sorry if my earlier comment was too abrupt, it was not intended.
Anyway I cleared my cache and ran diskeeper again. This was the
output:

2 16 KB \Program
Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\Cache\fat.db [Excess Allocation]
12 1 KB \Documents and
Settings\rphillip\ntuser.dat.LOG [Excess Allocation]
2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\default.LOG
[Excess Allocation]
2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG
[Excess Allocation]
2 16 KB \Program
Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\netscape.hst [Excess Allocation]
2 400 KB \WINNT\security\logs\scepol.log
[Excess Allocation]

One thing though, my mail account is directed from my D drive not C.
Only my browser is on C. I do not have any problems defraging my D
drive.
I think you are talking about changing my user, is this correct? If
so how would that fix the other files? What I am noticing is that the
defrag error files are consistent apart from the netscape ones.

Well I cleared the logs in Admin tools but the problem is still there.
 See below. Sorry.

Fragments File size Most fragmented files
2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\default.LOG

5 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG
[Excess Allocation]
2 1 KB \Documents and
Settings\rphillip\ntuser.dat.LOG [Excess Allocation]
2 401 KB \WINNT\security\logs\scepol.log
[Excess Allocation]

Well they come and go. The only constant are the three log files.
Are we sure this is a problem? Can those log files be cleared too?
What is "excess Allocation"?
