Every time I run defrag in Windows 200 pro there are three files that do not defrag. This consequently schedules a disk check on the next startup. I would like to know what this error is telling me and how can I fix it? |

Hi, If you are not comfortable with the procedure I posted earlier, here are some alternative disk optimisation programs. You can try using Norton Speed Disk from Norton Systemware 2002 or 2003. If it works for you and you are interested in buying it, I suggest you go for the latest. This has Windows XP support too so you will not be left with an unusable software if you upgrade to XP in future. -URL- http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat/ec_MAIN.Entry10?V1=426992&PN=1&SP=10023&xid=27674&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=0 2. RAXCO Perfect Disk 2000 is another option. You can download a trial here. -URL- http://www.raxco.com/products/downloadit/perfectdisk2000_download.cfm 3. DISKEEPER 7.0 -URL- http://www.softwareshelf.com/downloads/ 4. O&O Defrag V4 Professional Edition -URL- http://www.oosoft.de/cgi-bin/download2/download-e.pl Please try defragmenting your computer with any of the above. If you still have problems, please revert back to me. Warm regards vinod-ga | |

hi, It would help me if I knew what these three files were. Anyway you can try this. If you know the file names and their locations (you can get this from the report after the defrag), make copies of them with different names. Erase the original files. Maintain a record of their locations and original names. Now run defrag once again. This time defrag should work through. Then rename the files and return them to their original locations. If this works out for you, please post a comment here and I will post it as an answer! Else, I will look for another solution, in which case, please send me the names and locations of the files in question. Warm regards vinod-ga |

Below is a copy of the defrag output file. I am reluctant to rename or remove these files Volume (C:): Volume size = 6,228 MB Cluster size = 4 KB Used space = 3,767 MB Free space = 2,461 MB Percent free space = 39 % Fragmentation percentage Volume fragmentation = 0 % Data fragmentation = 0 % File fragmentation Total files = 60,952 Average file size = 71 KB Total fragmented files = 3 Total excess fragments = 48 Average fragments per file = 1.00 Paging File fragmentation Paging/Swap file size = 256 MB Total fragments = 1 Directory fragmentation Total directories = 3,495 Fragmented directories = 0 Excess directory fragments = 0 Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation Total MFT size = 74,328 KB MFT record count = 64,474 Percent MFT in use = 86 % Total MFT fragments = 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fragments File size Most fragmented files 46 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG [Excess Allocation] 3 395 KB \WINNT\security\logs\scepol.log [Excess Allocation] 2 1,188 KB \Program Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\Cache\fat.db [Excess Allocation] |

I already use Diskeeper Lite. I used it and gave you the output yesterday. |

Hi, Sorry if my earlier comment was too abrupt, it was not intended. Anyway I cleared my cache and ran diskeeper again. This was the output: 2 16 KB \Program Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\Cache\fat.db [Excess Allocation] 12 1 KB \Documents and Settings\rphillip\ntuser.dat.LOG [Excess Allocation] 2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\default.LOG [Excess Allocation] 2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG [Excess Allocation] 2 16 KB \Program Files\Netscape\users\russell_phillips\netscape.hst [Excess Allocation] 2 400 KB \WINNT\security\logs\scepol.log [Excess Allocation] One thing though, my mail account is directed from my D drive not C. Only my browser is on C. I do not have any problems defraging my D drive. I think you are talking about changing my user, is this correct? If so how would that fix the other files? What I am noticing is that the defrag error files are consistent apart from the netscape ones. |

Well I cleared the logs in Admin tools but the problem is still there. See below. Sorry. Fragments File size Most fragmented files 2 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\default.LOG [Excess Allocation] 5 1 KB \WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG [Excess Allocation] 2 1 KB \Documents and Settings\rphillip\ntuser.dat.LOG [Excess Allocation] 2 401 KB \WINNT\security\logs\scepol.log [Excess Allocation] |

Well they come and go. The only constant are the three log files. Are we sure this is a problem? Can those log files be cleared too? What is "excess Allocation"? |
