German to English translation. Context is a patent for a remotely
controlled device for working on a vertical surface. Device is held
against surface by a partial vacuum generated within the device. The
device is supported at the front by a cleaning implement (unspecified
but perhaps a squeegee) and by two drive rollers or wheels at the
back. The position of the device on the surface "ist nicht
mechanisch uberbestimmt." I need the meaning for "uberbestimmt." If
"overdetermined" is suggested, what--in its turn--does this mean.

Good Day,

With an oral and written knowledge of German, this is what I
understand from the message:

uber [y':ber] 1. Over
As defined by the Langenscheidt German - English dictionary

bestimmt I. pp of bestimmen II adj 1. a) certain (day, number, etc),
b) special (plan, etc), c) definite: et. Bestimmtes something (or
anything) special (or definite). 2 determined, firm...
As defined by the Langenscheidt German - English dictionary

What does this all add up to? Here is what I am reading:

"ist nicht mechanisch uberbestimmt"
"is not mechanically overdefined"

In other words, there are no set specifics for the location of the
device. That does not mean it can be ANYWHERE. It is not
OVERDEFINED, not UNDEFINED. In other words there is some basic
mechanical rules that should be followed, but exact positioning is up
to the designer.

I hope this helps. If not, please ask for a clarification, perhaps
with more of the German text. Sometimes a context of a piece of text
can change with particular preceding or following terms, etc.

Regards,

Same conclusion as mine, altho I was unable to substantiate my
conclusion. I'm still not satisfied by the English meaning, but will
accept the translation as it stands.
