I have Windows 98. I bought Windows XP. I found out that the following
software and hardware is not compatible. I was told to download
drivers for each which are compatible. I went to the various sites,
but can't make head nor tail of them. The following list is from a
print-out of incompatible software and hardware during the
installation process of Windows XP. I cancelled the installation when
I found this out. 1) Imagine Device: CanoScan N65OU/N656U (not
currently present)2) Modem: MDP3900V-U Modem #2 MDP3900V-U Modem (not
currently present) 3) Printer HP LaserJet 1100 Printer 4) Sound, Video
and game controllers: Midiman USB MidiSport 2x2 Midi Driver 4)
Universal Serial Bus controllers: Midiman USB MidiSport 2x2 Loader
(not currently present) Midiman USB MidiSport 2x2 Midi Driver 5)
Scanners or Digital Cameras that might not work: CanoScan N65OU/N656U
6) Software that does not support Windows XP: Caere Scan Manager 5.1
(in Control Panel) Cubasis VST 3 (on the Desktop) 7) IntelliPoint 2.x
8) Norton AntiVirus (This Program may have compatibility issues on
this version of Windows.) 9) Norton Antivirus Live Update. (ditto) 10)
Phone Tools: Phone Tools is incompatible with this version of windows.
(What's a Phone tool?) 11) Software that must be reinstalled: Logitech
MouseWare Drivers, Web Publishing Wizard (on the Start menu) 12)
Software Incompatible with Windows XP: Creative Labs SoundBlaster
Accessories. 13) Software that might not support Windows XP: Intgernet
Alert (2) (a startup program) Internet Alert (A startup program)
If this is more than one question, please charge me for each. I
tried to return the Windows XP software to Office Max, but they
refused. This is crazy! Nobody told me about all this. Now, I have to
install Windows XP or loose my money entirely. Please help!! How and
where do I find and download these various drivers?

Hi there,

I think everyone hates this process. For each product I have listed
where you can find the latest official drivers and/or information.
When you click on a link to the actual driver, Windows will ask you
what you want to do with the file - select save, and save it somewhere
easy to remember for later.

1) Imaging Device: CanoScan N65OU/N656U
http://12.129.248.84/techsupport.php?p=csn650u&q=download

2) Modem: MDP3900V-U Modem #2 MDP3900V-U Modem
XP instructions:
http://www.aztech.com/driver/modem_mdp3900.htm
(thanks slawek-ga)
Other sites that have the Windows 2000 driver:
http://www.modem-drivers.com/drivers/57/57711.htm
http://support.ap.dell.com/ap/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R20630&sid=&lib=0&os=Windows_NT&searchtype=adv&searchcriteria=aztec%20pc-99

3) Printer HP LaserJet 1100 Printer
There are a few different models called LaserJet 1100, you'll need to
work out which:
http://productfinder.support.hp.com/tps/ProductFinder?h_lang=en&h_tool=software&h_query=1100

4)Midiman USB MidiSport 2x2 Midi Driver
http://www.midiman.net/support/driversearch.php
Select MidiSport 2x2 and Windows XP

5): CanoScan N65OU/N656U
See 1)

6a) Caere Scan Manager 5.1
The company that now supports this product is ScanSoft. The best
information on their website simply says to uninstall OmniPage Pro,
and then reinstall it:
http://knowledgebase.scansoft.com/view.asp?tnID=329

This copy of correspondence on this topic suggests that Caere Scan
Manager will not work with Windows XP:
http://www.fruitcakeoutlet.com/ra/scanSoft.htm

6b) Cubasis VST 3
http://service.steinberg.net/webdoc.nsf/show/updates_pc_e

7) IntelliPoint 2.x
Information:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315923
Download:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouse/download.asp

8) Norton AntiVirus
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/cgi-bin/menu.cgi?URL=%2Ftechsupp%2Fnav%2Ffiles_nav.html

9) Norton Antivirus Live Update.
see 8) above

10) Phone Tools
This is related to your modem.
Information:

Download:

11a) Logitech MouseWare Drivers
A reinstall of the mouse should work fine, being such a popular mouse
XP will certainly already have the correct driver, otherwise go here:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?page=downloads/categories&CRID=320&countryid=19&languageid=1

11b) Web Publishing Wizard
A new version of this is included in XP, you don't need to do
anything.

12) Software Incompatible with Windows XP: Creative Labs SoundBlaster
Accessories.
http://www.americas.creative.com/support/

13) Software that might not support Windows XP: Internet Alert
I'm not sure what this product is - see if you can find out more about
it your end (to find the program's location - right click on the Start
button, select Explore, double click on Programs then Startup, right
click on Internet Alert and select Properties) and post a
clarification - and I will see what I can do.

Search Strategy:

Basically used Google to search for each product, usually the official
site is the first listed, and then browsed the official site looking
for updated drivers (usually in the Support section).

If you have any further problems finding the correct drivers for the
products you listed, just ask for a clarification here.

If you have other problems relating to your upgrade to XP, it would be
best to post a new question.

Best wishes & good luck,
robertskelton-ga

Good Day,

CANONS WEB SITE: Scanner Driver Information for XP
You will find a link to the Windows 2000 driver, which Canon lists as
a compatible driver for Windows XP.
URL: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/techsupport/faq/xp_scanner.html

AZTECH LABS: Modem Driver Information for XP
URL: http://www.aztech.com/driver/modem_mdp3900.htm
"1) Windows XP already has an inbuilt driver (detected as "Dell Data
Fax Modem"). Plug in the PCI modem, and the system will detect and
install the hardware driver automatically without user intervention

2) For users who upgraded from previous OS, then you must first remove
the old modem driver before upgrading to WinXP"

HP LASERJET 1100 PRINTER: Printer Driver Location for XP
URL: http://productfinder.support.hp.com/tps/ProductFinder?h_lang=en&h_tool=software&h_query=HP+LaserJet+1100+Printer

This is what I found so far. It seems that going to the manufacturers
of the equipment yields pretty good results. This is what I have done
so far. Please let me know if I should repost as an official answer,
or if you would like to maybe post a question for me (just address it
to slawek-ga and specify that others answers will be refused)... $25
is a little too much for these three drivers, so a smaller amount
might be a better idea. :)

burt62,
I sure feel your pain...the same thing happened to me when Windos ME
came out. About 2 months before, I had bought a new CD-burner and
scanner, both of which were incompatible with ME, and they did not
have updated drivers. I had so much trouble, that I uninstalled ME and
put my Win 98 back on. When I bought Win XP (Yeah, I still did even
though I was thoroughly upset with Microsoft over ME), I went to
www.microsoft.com, and typed "HCL" into the search box. This brings
you to their Hardware Compatibility List, and you can compare YOUR
hardware to their software.

We are not alone in our angst, and this is precisely why a lot of
people are switching to other operating systems, such as Linnux,
Lindows, or even abandoning PCs altogether and going to Apple.

Good Luck!

When the Scansoft Omnipage Pro9 software is installed onto a system
with Windows XP (Home Edition) & Office XP with the Security Settings
being set to Medium or High, when opening a Microsoft Application a
Macro error occurs warning that the security certicates for caere have
expired, Omnipage Pro9 may also fail to load with the High Security
Setting.

Solution:
Disable OCR aware from within Omnipage Pro9 this is located in the
tools menu, choose "options" then select the "OCR aware" tab.
Finally the "Aware97.dot" file needs to be deleted from the c:\Program
Files\MicrosoftOffice\office10 directory
