Question ID: 66381
Where can I buy for the least cost, the HP Lazer Jet Print Cartridges,
specifically 92A, for my HP 3200 fax machine and HP laserJet 1100
printer. Also, I have stayed away from re-fills for used cartridges
or buying cartridges from other knock-offs, but are these good
solutions to be considered and do they last as long and do as good a
quality of work?

Hello schmooz,

And thanks for your question.

I checked the HP web site to get an exact part number for your
cartridge and found the following:

hp LaserJet 92a ultraprecise print cartridge, black (LJ 1100/3200
series) C4092A $56.99

Armed with that information, I checked my three favorite shopping
comparison sites :

1. Pricescan at www.pricescan.com - entered "computers" and "C4092a"
under search criteria and found the results on this page:
http://www.pricescan.com/items/item109070.asp

You will see the lowest listed price is $48.00, however some vendors
list their shipping charges and some do not. It is not unusual for
"some" vendors to try to make their profit on the shipping and
handling charges, so you will have to check a web page or two from
here to see who REALLY has the best deal when all is said and done.

Additionally, this page shows the same cartridges refurbished (and
we'll talk about that in a moment):
http://www.pricescan.com/items/item109070_r.asp

You'll note there is not a great savings here, perhaps 10%

I then went to #2

2. Pricewatch at www.pricewatch.com

Simply entering C4092A in the search box at the top, I brought up a
page of listings for this toner.

You will note that the lowest price refurbished including shipping
here is $42 and new prices start at $49 with free shipping.

Finally, I went to CNET at
http://shopper.cnet.com/shopping/0-1257.html?tag=hd_ts . Sorting
results by price show $43 plus shipping new and refurbished at
$34.66.

Do remember that your final cost may also include sales tax depending
on where you live and where you make this purchase, so you will have
to do just a little bit of comparison to find the absolute lowest
landed price for your specific circumstances.

Now, refurbished toner cartridges:

These are rebuilt in 2 different ways - drilled and refilled and
rebuilt.. That being said I have never in 15 years of using
remanufactured toner cartridges had any problem or lack of quality
with two exceptions:

Drilled and refilled can leak and get toner inside you printer which
must be cleaned out. This has happened to me, and will not happen with
totally rebuilt cartridges.

And the drum of a crtridge has a limited lifespan. Without replacing
the drum, I would not refill a cartridge more than once. Some
rebuilders replace the drum and other worn parts and some simply
refill. Be sure you know what you are buying.

A good description and Freequently Asked Questions on rebuilt
cartridges can be found here: http://www.newworldtech.com/news/faq.asp

You'll not this company describes the difference as follows:

"What is the difference between a Class I & a Class II cartridge?

Cartridges can be remanufactured one of two ways. The highest-quality
product is labeled and classified as a Class II. This product will
include a New long life drum as well as other new parts. These other
new parts could include, cleaning blades, Primary Charge Rollers,
Developer Rollers and doctor blades. The actual amount of new parts
can vary with the different type of cartridges depending on what parts
can be replaced. Because of the high percentage of brand new parts
going into a Class II product this is the more expensive choice but
also the High Quality choice. Evidence of this is found in the fact
that our Class II product falls within 1% of OEM standards.

The Less expensive alternative is the Class I choice. The drum on this
cartridge is a recoated drum and is not new. Further, a lot of the
parts in the cartridge are in another cycle of their life and may have
been reconditioned to do so. They are post- tested to the same
rigorous degree as the Class II and will give a quality print when put
in the printer, (just like a Class II). As there are more recycled
parts in the Class I there is a higher possibility that the parts may
wear out before the end of the life cycle of the cartridge."

I trust this have proven informative for you.

Best regards,
