Ok, I'm going to try and explain this the best I can...I don't really
understand it that well and some Comcast tech guy explained the
problem to me, but didn't know how to fix it.

basically, we've got a cable modem that's "working" and sending and
recieving data from comcast. however, it's not working correctly with
xp.

evidently, there's a REGISTRY VALUE that makes xp automatically assign
an "automatic private address" no matter what. We need it get the
address assigned by DHTP. According to the comcast tech guy, there's
a simple registry value that you need to change so it can be assigned
by DHTP. He didn't know what the value was and I sure as heck am not
going around messing around with the registry unless I know exactly
what I'm doing.

From some searches I did, this guy had the exact same problem, but no
one had a solution for him either:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1014973333

I've got more info on what the problem is than he does, but I'm not
closer to solving the problem.

Please post your answer as a clarification so I can test it before
closing the question. Feel free to ask for clarification as well,
don't know how much I'll be able to tel you though. All I need is to
know is what registry value to change and to change it to. Thanks.

As requested I'm posting this as a clarification. I believe you mean
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) rather than DHTP. DHCP is
the network protocol that enables a DHCP server to automatically
assign an IP address to an individual computer's TCP/IP stack
software. The site below has detailed instructions on turning off the
"auto-configuration" feature in Windows XP

Search terms:
+DHcP +registry +"windows XP" +assign +"IP address"

Good luck... Hope this helps

Ahhhh! I misheard the acronym. Might explain why I couldn't find
anything on it :-)

Ok, make sure I got this right...to solve my problem...I simply follow
these instructions...

"You can deactivate the AutoIPgeneration for the complete computer
using the Registry-key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
Add the following value to this key: "IPAutoconfigurationEnabled",
Value type: REG_DWORD
Value in hexadecimal: 0 (A value of 0 disables APIPA support on this
computer) :"

Please confirm that that's it, and then let me try it and I'll get
back to you on whether or not to post this as an answer.

dang, I love this place...hehe :-)

I had originally posted this as a clarification but then there was no
record of my answering it. The article I sent does indeed tell how to
disable the "auto assigned" IP feature in Windows XP (which is what
you asked). I don't know if this is the actual problem you're having
with your network... but it does answer your question.

I think the answer was the correct answer, though it didn't solve my
problem. I do appreciate the knowledgable answer, however,
resolutionman directly disobeyed my instructions (which he
acknowledged earlier) not to post the answer as a answer until I had
time to check it and make sure it worked. Great answer, but please
follow the questioner's instructions next time. It'll save you
trouble. xemion-ga
