Are you looking for 3-D shooters (aka Quake, Unreal), or any kind of
game engine whatsoever (RPGs, etc)?

all of id's tech (quake etc), all of epic's tech (unreal etc), various
versions of lithtech, renderware, netimmerse, Intrinsic Alchemy, cro
team's serious sam, synaptic soup's Cipher.

answer should definitely include info on quake, unreal, lithtech and
renderware.
is there any other 'general purpose' engines out there? engines one
could use to make a 3D game of various ganres like FPS, Racing,
Sports, Simulation games, Action/Adventure...

what game engines can be licensed?

LithTech (Eidos is using it for NOLF) Also Epic's new Unreal Engine
(US Army is a licensee.)

for what price?

That can be discussed with the publishers. Ask them for a quote. But
basically, it's a case of "if you have to ask..." :)

How many licenses of each engine have been sold each year for the past
5 years?

It's a highly secretive industry... doubt you will find that info.
Also, a game engine is not a game. Games are a volume industry -- low
prices, high volume. Engines are different. They generally only
license to people who can pay and can be relied upon to not
"clean-room" the engine.

What are the top 5 companies (game development studios or game
publishers) who
bought the most licenses in the past 3 years and which engines did
they buy?

Again, this kind of data is hard to come by. But if you look around,
you can get an impression of what engines are popular.
