Chuck Thompson, a Baltimore Colt's and Orioles broadcaster is famous for coining sayings such as "Ain't the Beer Cold" and "Go to war, Miss Agnes." The first quote is the title of his memoirs. It's meaning is clear. However, What does the "Go to War..." quote refer to, what's its derivation and in what context would Chuck have used it in a sports broadcast? |

Hi, I am leaving this information as a comment. In a recent article in the York Daily Record, dated August 6, 2002, While vision fades, his voice remains golden by DAN CONNOLLY: Chuck Thompson said Go to War, Miss Agnes on April 27, 1968, when Tom Phoebus pitched a no-hitter. Hes done it, the no-hitter. Tommy Phoebus has pitched a no-hitter. Go to war, Miss Agnes. April 27, 1968 Source: York Daily Record Website http://216.239.39.100/search?q=cache:5_yZKPV9tqcC:www.ydr.com/main/news/1main2020806.shtml+%22Go+to+war,+Miss+Agnes.%22&hl=es&ie=UTF-8 Another mention of Chuck Thompsons saying: Chuck was the same way. He would "go to war Miss Agnes" when something good happened, but he would be just as quick to criticize if the Birds were dogging it. http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22go+to+war+miss+agnes%22&hl=es&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=jefam-ya023180000511961617460001%40news.clark.net&rnum=10 |
