Dear Dan (mynameisdan-ga),

There is inconclusive scientific information regarding the percentage
of registered voters that own stocks. However, there are some findings
that answer your question.

In a poll conducted by the "New Democrats" <http://www.newdem.org/>,
60% of the 704 registered voters surveyed declared they own stocks
(margin of error: 3.8%). The figures spreads evenly between registered
Democrats and Republicans (source: New Democrats, "National Poll",
<http://www.newdem.org/nationalpoll.pdf>, p. 8. This is a PDF document
and requires "Acrobat Reader", which you can download from
<http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html>).

This complies with results of another survey, taken *only* in Arizona,
but presented here as supportive information. This survey, conducted
by the KAET-TV/Channel 8 (a part of Arizona State University), found
that some 63% of the registered voters (surveyed: 418 registered
voters, April 2001) own NASDQ or NYSE stocks (source: KAET-TV/Channel
8, Arizona State University, "KAET POLL:
ARIZONA'S STRONGLY SUPPORT DEATH PENALTY; OPPOSE TELEVISING MCVEIGH’S
EXECUTION TO PUBLIC"
<http://www.kaet.asu.edu/horizon/poll/2001/4-24-01.htm>, Q4).

In both cases, figures are higher than the national average of stock
owners: "More than 30 million households now own stocks, bonds or
money market mutual funds -- compared to just 4.6 million as recently
as 1980, according to the Investment Company Institute" (source:
National Centre for Policy Analysis, "MONTH IN REVIEW - Aug 1996",
<http://www.ncpa.org/pd/monthly/pd896p.html>).

Another figure, that of 70%-74% percent, was used by two different
sources. It should be noted, that this also included pensions schemes
and funds. One of the sources is a Rush Limbough fans newsgroup - not
highly credible source - one of the posters, who identified himself as
Jerry Watson claimed that "I heard NPR claim that 70% of registered
voters own stocks in some form, be it 401k, pension, or whatever as
opposed to 50% of the general population" (source:
alt.fan.rush-limbough, "Re: Retail Sales Up Surprising 1.1 Percent",
<http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22registered+voters%22+%22own+stocks%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=GwYX8.233%24Lj1.18881827%40newssvr13.news.prodigy.com&rnum=3>).

No such recent NPR (National Public Radio) survey was found, but an
article in the New York Times, by STANLEY B. GREENBERG, quotes about
the same figures: "With 74 percent of likely voters in next year's
election owning stocks or having retirement accounts, the financial
scandals hit close to home: Three in five of these voters report
suffering losses this year". (source: Greenberg, Stanley B., "What
Voters Want", August 5 2002, as quoted in Montgomery County Democrats'
site <http://www.mcdp.net/News.htm>).

My search terms in this case were :

+of "registered voters" "invest in stocks"
+of "registered voters" invest stocks
"registered voters" invest stocks
"registered voters" "own stocks"
"registered voters" "owning stocks"

I think that answered your question. However, if you need
clarifications, please let me know.
