You might possibly be able to identify the earliest article on Kafka written by an Indian academic, book reviewer or similar. However, there would be no way to prove that no one else had read Kafka before this person did. Even knowing when Kafka's books first appeared for sale in India would not help you, because someone could have been sent the book from Europe. |

I agree with the foregoing comments that there is no way you can ever be sure who first read Kafka in India. But what I really wanted to say is that Kafka was not German, although he wrote in that language. He was born in Prague, which at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; but he is usually counted as being Czech. |

if you could even find out in which decade 1940's,1950's or 1960's kafka became popular in india it would be helpful.i know he is quite popular in india but when was he recieved first.reception could be in the form of adaptations, music pieces, movies, book reviews or even his appearance in university syllabus.i myself have been able to go back to 1962 when an urdu short story writer intizar husain wrote 'kaya-kalp' based on kafka's 'metamorphosis'.this is important because i am writing a postgrad thesis on kafka reception in india.i want to compare kafka's first reception to the historical, social, and cultural milieu of india. |
