Hello Emmalee,
Thank you for your question.
My search returned the following results for social, economic and
technological developments in the United States in the decade of the
1970s.
During the seventies the nation fell into an economic funk and
inflation soared to new levels. In 1972 Richard Nixon pulled troops
out of Vietnam. A time of widespread public cynicism of the government
followed when President Nixon and the Republicans got caught
eavesdropping on Democratic party headquarters in the Watergate
scandal. Nixon was impeached and became the first president ever to
resign on August 9th 1974. In September of 1972 the Olympics were
highlighted by the dominance of American swimmer Mark Spitz and marked
by the tragedy of the execution of most of the Israeli Olympic team by
terrorists. In 1975, teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa disappeared never to
be found again. The seventies marked the beginning of women's movement
lead by intellectuals including Gloria Steinem. The movement responded
to the exploitative nature of the 60's sexual revolution. On July 4th
1976, America celebrated its 200th birthday. The end of the seventies
saw the rise and fall disco and the opening of chic clubs like New
York's Studio 54 where outrageous sex acts, excessive drug use, and
tax evasion ran supreme.

The economy also suffered from stagflation: when inflation and
unemployment rise, but the economy remains stalled and stagnant. To
make matters worse, a revolution in Iran also caused oil and gas
shortages.

The following excerpt describes major developments in technology
during the 1970īs.
The floppy disc appeared in 1970, and the next year Intel introduced
the microprocessor, the "computer on a chip." Apollo 17, the last
manned craft to the moon, brought back 250 samples of rock and soil.
Unmanned space probes explored the moon, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn,
Uranus, and Venus. The U.S. Apollo 18 and the USSR's Soyuz 19 linked
up in space to conduct joint experiments. Atari produced the first
low-priced integrated circuit TV games, and the videocassette recorder
(VCR) changed home entertainment forever. Jumbo jets revolutionized
commercial flight, doubling passenger capacity and increasing flight
range to 6,000 miles. The neutron bomb, which destroys living beings
but leaves buildings intact, was developed. In medicine, ultrasound
diagnostic techniques were developed. The sites of DNA production on
genes were discovered, and the fledging research in genetic
engineering was halted pending development of safer techniques. The
first test tube baby was born, developed from an artificially
inseminated egg implanted in the mother's womb.

1970's Fads
There were many fads in the 1970's. Pet rocks were big in the 1970's.
The would come in little boxes with little peace of straw in the
bottom of the box. Platform shoes were also very large in the 70's.
People would wear them mostly to parties, but others would wear them
everywhere. Jogging suits were also a big trend in fashion. Later,
people started to worry about their weight. For some reason, jogging
became a popular sport, so jogging suits became popular not just for
running and working out, but for fashion too. "Earth Day" was also a
popular fad in the 70s. This was celebrated on April 22. Earth Day
was a day when people did such things as wear gas masks to demonstrate
their concern about pollution and the wish they had for a cleaner
Earth.
