I often setup PCs and Macs (running OSX) with publicly addressable IP
addresses. This is so I can get into them remotely. I like to be
able to remotely exchange files, and control the computer. I use
Timbuktu, VNC, the Surf Up feature of PC Sync, and others. Some of
these open up dynamic UDP ports for file xfer and chatting.
I also like to be able to videoconference or share a whiteboard with
remote associates. That is another reason I love computers with a
publicly addressable IP, and no port filtering.
I am nervous leaving these PC out on the net with no protection, so I
want to implement a filewall program.
Ive tried Zone Alarms 2.5 and Black Ice, but opening up the right
ports for all my software was a pain in the ass. I couldnt get Zone
alarm to let me use certain real-time chat programs, even when I told
it to disable itself. I had to do a complete removal of the Zone
Alarm Pro program to get some of them working again.
Do you know of any software firewall that has features that will let
me do what I want to do, and still be protected?

Hello Sherpaj,
Are you interested in ...
- software that operates on each machine to protect each one
individually
- a stand alone firewall to protect a group of machines
- software to run on one of the machines to protect itself and a
group of machines
or some combination of these. I can also suggest some alternatives
that set the firewall settings very high and use tunneling or a VPN to
implement the variety of services you are looking for. Please advise.

I want something I can load on each and every computer. It would be
super cool if I only had to set the prefs once and can then copy the
prefs file, but I this is no big. I don't want to use VPN or
tunneling, it is too much hassle to setup and troubleshoot.

Hello sherpaj,
Are you looking for a PC only solution running Windows, or must this
solution also run on Macs?
If PC only, I have a great solution for you.

I am looking for a PC solution, but would also appriciate a separate
mac solution (or at least links to something that might work - that
might still enable Timbuktu and other software to receive on dynamic
UDP ports).

sherpaj-
When you access these systems remotely, are you normally coming from
the same system (or at least from a small subset of systems)?
