What are the smallest size of electric/electronic motors that vibrate
and cand be controlled by a remote control?

Hi honeyboy-ga,

By "vibrate" do you mean the vibration is a byproduct of the rotation,
or do you mean that the vibration is the main function of the motor
(some type of linear, bi-directional movement) derived from the
rotation?

Thanks,

The function of remote control is normally performed by the addition
of extra components, are you looking for a manufactured motor with
remote capability built in (i.e. that is how it comes from the
factory). Also what is the level of vibration you are seeking, there
'might' be some micro motors which oscillate at high frequency (rather
like a quartz device) but produce little in the way of physical
sensation.

Hi kyrie26-ga:

To clarify: By "vibration" I mean that the vibration is the
main function of the motor (linear, bidirectional, etc)derived from the
rotation or other direction...........

                                                                Thanx!

Hi lot-ga!

To calrify, I am interested in commercially available
motors that are able to vibrate as in :massage" as opposed to any
other function........

                                                               thanks,

Are fully-assembled massage devices (that happen to be very small) a
possibility for fulfilling your needs? Or are you looking for strictly
the motor components?

Hi honeyboy,

The most common type of vibrating motor works by rotating a shaft to
which an off-center weight is attached. As the motor rotates, its
center of gravity changes, and this is felt as a vibration of the
device to which the motor is attached.

In recent years, small vibrating motors have been developed for use as
"alert" devices for mobile phones and pagers. Some very small
vibrating motors are now available.

Depending on your intended use, you may not need the absolute smallest
available. Other factors such as strength of vibration, cost,
operating current and voltage, shape and durability might also be
important. They are not very expensive, so you may wish to get "one of
each" to see how well each one meets your needs.

All of these motors are standard DC motors and can be remote
controlled. You will need to purchase a remote control module
separately, according to whether you prefer radio control, infra-red
control by means of a standard TV/video remote control, or audio
control by means of a clap or other sudden noise.

You may be able to connect the motor or motors directly to the remote
control module. This will depend on the voltage and current
requirements of your chosen motor, and also on how many of them you
wish to connect to one controller. If the power loading is too great
for a direct connection, you would connect the controller to a relay
which switches power to the motors.

Here are some very small vibrating motors that are available as
components. In each case, there is a picture or illustration available
on the web. In most cases, I have listed two sources: All Electronics
Corp and SurplusTraders. Of the two, Surplus Traders is the more
expensive.

(I will list some remote controllers after the listing of motors.)

DCM-185/MC785 TWO SPEED VIBRATING MOTOR WITH SWITCH

This is the largest of the motors that I have listed here, in case you
need more intense vibration than provided by some of the really small
motors. It comes with a three position switch with positions for
"off", "low power" and "high power".

Size 0.94 inches by 0.72 inches by 1.35 inches long motor, with an 0.4
inch long 0.07 inch (2mm) diameter shaft to which is attached a
"relatively heavy" semicircular weight. 1.5 to 6 volts DC. Price range
$0.65 to $6.50 each depending on quantity and vendor.

PANASONIC VIBRATING MICRO-MOTOR AKME-BC

This is smaller than the one above, but still larger than most of the
motors listed here.

Size 0.59 inches by 0.79 inches by 1.15 inches long motor, with an
0.31 inch long 0.08 inch (2mm) diameter shaft to which is attached a
semicircular weight. Six to twelve volts DC. Price range $0.65 to
$2.19 each depending on quantity and vendor.

http://www.73.com/a/0185.shtml

DCM-204/GA083 MINIATURE VIBRATING MOTOR

This is a very tiny motor.

Size 0.24 inch diameter by 0.5 inches long, plus 0.21 inches length
for the shaft and weight. Comes with a removable rubber boot which can
provide a flat mounting surface. 1.5 to 3 volts DC at 62 milliamps.
$1.00 to $4.95 each depending on quantity and vendor.

http://www.73.com/a/0185.shtml

DCM-179/MC880 "TINY" VIBRATING MOTOR

This one is slightly longer than the one above, but quite a bit
thinner.

Size 0.16 inch diameter by 0.5 inches long, plus 0.3 inches length for
the shaft and weight. Comes with a removable silicone boot which can
provide a flat mounting surface. 1.5 to 3 volts DC. $1.00 to $1.90
each depending on quantity and vendor.

http://www.73.com/a/0185.shtml

MC911/MC099 1.3 VOLT VIBRATOR MOTOR

Similar in size and shape to the one above, but not identical.

Size 0.375 inches by 0.25 inches including mounting boot, by 0.875
inches long including shaft. 1.3 volts DC at 80 milliamps. $1.90 to
$2.99 depending on quantity.

SANKO ELECTRIC #1E120

This one is the smallest of all. It is button-shaped with the weight
enclosed within the motor.

Size 0.55 inches diameter and 0.135 inches thick. Three volts DC.
$1.25 to $2.40 each depending on vendor.

Here are some remote control devices.

RADIO CONTROL

This radio-controlled receiver is 2.81 inches by 1.5 inches by 2
inches, operating on 12 volts DC. It is designed for use in an alarm
system, but can be used in an application such as yours if it is not
too big for your needs. $5.50 each.

AUDIO CONTROL

This sound-operated receiver responds to a hand-clap or other sharp
noise, and is specifically mentioned as suitable for motor control. It
operates on three volts DC. It comes as a kit. No size is given, but
it's much smaller than the radio control module. $4.75 each.

http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=search&item=EM-106&type=store

INFRA-RED CONTROL

You can use any video or audio remote control to activate this
receiver. It comes as a circuit-board 3.4 inches by 0.69 inches. It
operates on 6 to 12 volts DC, and switches 75 milliamps. $5.00 each.

An alternative infrared transmitter/receiver kit is offered by Jameco
as part number 177092 for $24.95. The size of the receiver circuit
board is 1.4 inches by 1.2 inches. It runs on 6 to 15 volts DC

To eiffel-ga. this answere is the best I've recieved so far. The
application I am most nterested is one that can withstand being placed
i a person's shoe (so it would have to be flatas possible, and could
be a little wider and longer) or placed at any poiny on the body to
provide pain releif.............
