Dear emmalee,
The list I give you here might be debated, as some view other
designers as important as these:
1950s - Post War period was characterised by a return to very
"feminine" fashion. A good site on 1950s fashion is Costume Gallery
<http://www.costumegallery.com/1950.htm>. Marilyn Monroe is a sex
icon. Important designers are Chanel and
Dior, both creating an evening dress mode in feminine fashion <see

1960s - Rock-and-Roll, baby, if to quote Austin Powers. The fashion
and the feminine style is very "sexy" (sexuality was repressed in
earlier decades), with the introduction of the mini skirt and the
birth control pill. Jackie Kennedy influences a whole generation of
Americans with her attraction to French style. Other influences: the
British Mod fashion, space fashion, Eastern patterns, big prints
(Costume Gallery: <http://www.costumegallery.com/1960.htm>). British
designers, such as Mary Quant, the mother of the mini, add to the more
classic French-Italian ones, like Cardin, Givenchy and Pucci. Other

1970s - Sixties fashion continues, but with introduction of new
materials (polyester, yuck) and desginers - influenced by the disco
fashion, and mixing "low" and "high" fashion. Skirts also come as maxi
and midi. The end of the decade was marked - especially in Europe - by
breaking all of the rules - the Punk fashion. Femininity is blurred
both in Punk and in the Annie Hall style. De la Renta and Givanchi
stand out, but also Halston, Missoni, Betsey Johnson, Stephen
Burrowns, and Zhandra Rhodes. The concept of "designer" gets more and
more in the market - "Widespread use of designer names and labels as
an incentive to shoppers, marking everything from clothing to luggage
with designers such as Geoffrey Beene and Christian Dior." (source:

1980s - Back to conservativism and a search for "power". Vivian
Westwood creates different - "punk"-like fashion. Jean Paul Gaultier
breaks the boundaries between the sexes. Moschino and John Galliano
are also prominent for this period. Princess Diana and her choice of
designers (mainly but not only British) sets taste for elegance.

1990s - Hip-hop and casual fashion is led by Tommy Hilfinger. Other
trends are "environmental friendly" fashion (hemp clothing, natural
unblenched cotton, and recycled PVC plastic woven into polyester
outwear, and of course, no furs). Other designers - such as Anna Sui
"recycle" fashion itself - bringing vintage retro into fashion. Other
prominents: Gucci, Donna Karan, Kelvin Klein and his unisex style.
