I have a pentium 2 compaq Presario 1725 and a 56 k robotics modem. I
want to silence the modem - when I dial out currently you can hear the
dial tone, dialing, and computers talking to each other. I would like
to hear NONE of these but would settle for fewer of them or at a much
lower volume.

My operating system is Windows XP and nothing in the control panel
(sounds or volume control) seems to impact my noisy modem.

Please, can you tell me how to silence my modem?
Diane

dhambly,

I can understand your dilemma….before I changed to cable modem, I used
to wake up everyone in the house with my 2am Internet visits!

Read beyond the steps you have already tried, and notice they have you
add an “&MO” (That’s a zero, not an “O”)

This site confirms the previous advice…scroll down to “silencing your
modem” near the bottom of the page.

Same trick, a bit of a different explanation:

As a last resort, try this site. You have already tried the volume
control, but I particularly like the suggestion to muffle the modem
with a pillow!

In case you might have AOL, here is a page that explains how to quiet
that modem with AOL. (It appears by the graphics that this might be an
older version of AOL, but I am willing to bet that the strings are the
same in the newer versions. If not, you could contact AOL for specific
help.

This site warns about being too quick to silence the modem, as it
reassures you it is doing its job!

If none of these tips do the trick for you, please ask for an answer
clarification before rating the answer.

May you enjoy surf in peace and quiet,

in edition to M0 there are actually 4 levels: M0 M1 M2 M3. All provide
a different level of volume for your modem. M1 is slightly louder than
M0, M2 louder than M1, and M3 being full volume.

This is something I remembered from my BBS days :)
