The answer to this question varies. Since Peter Driben's magazine art
was more than likely done as "work-for-hire," the magazines themsleves
probably have the rights to the work. You'd have to contact individual
magazines that featured his work to find out more about specific
pieces of art.

Nothing comes up for Peter Driben at the US Copyright Office website
(http://www.copyright.gov/records), but if you have specific pieces of
artwork in mind, and know what publication they originally appeared
in, you may be able to check records at this site.

The Copyright Office also has a thorough and helpful website for those
wanting to learn more about it:

http://www.loc.gov/copyright

Keywords Used:

"U.S. Copyright Office"

Hope this helps!

Hi Twist,

It really depends on the piece in question. In some instances, the
artist will retain copyright of a work used for a magazine cover. In
others, particularly in the case of a commissioned work, the person
commissioning the work is given copyright control.

If you have a specific piece in mind, it would be helpful in locating
the information you seek. Was there one in particular you were
looking for? Or are you more interested in the (rather more tangled)
status of his entire body of work?
