I need a list of dual diagnosis (substance abuse/mental health)
treatment facilities. Please list facilities that are long term (6-12
months) and have financial aid available. Search can include the
continental us but please sort by geographical location Ex: north,
south, east, west. The facilities should accept 20 year old males and
have some outdoor component to the treatment.

Hello, flowerlady-ga

This was a very challenging question that I have a special heart for
answering. My brother has suffered from severe mental illness and
substance abuse for over 30 years. I know the challenges, financial
obstacles, worries and frustrations that come with finding a good
facility. I have spent several hours trying to find some resources to
meet your needs. However, I must say that the major component I looked
for along with dual-diagnosis was length of treatment, age of patient,
and cost factors. The outdoor component took a backseat, and can be
considered an added plus if available. Even so, those facilities that
offered a sliding scale or were considered low-cost were hard to find.

Here is what I have found:

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Facilities with long-term residential stay,
sliding scale, male 20-year old, 6-12 months, as well as some outdoor
component:

The listed treatment centers were gleaned from the following
resources. Explore the lists further to consider those which do not
specify longer length of stay, and if you feel comfortable contacting
them about the possibility of financial help.

The Dual Diagnosis Website at http://users.erols.com/ksciacca/ has a
link to a database of treatment centers. The only useful way to search
it, it seems, is to go to the comprehensive database and take the time
to click through each link. Unfortunately, most centers listed do not
provide any information on length of stay, payment options, etc.

The Substance Abuse Facility Locator provides a method for you to
search for facilities by state. Go to the website at
http://www.health.org/dbases/ and click on “Treatment Facility
Locator,” or go directly to the US map at
http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/facilitylocatordoc.htm

I also recommend calling the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill
at:
 Phone: 703-524-7600; NAMI HelpLine: 1-800-950-NAMI [6264]. Their
website is www.nami.org. They may be able to refer you to the closest
facilities to your area.

I sincerely hope that these recommendations will give you a starting
point. I suggest that with each contact, you ask for for
recommendations for other facilities that provide long-term services
at low cost.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. I hope,
with all my heart, that find a treatment center to help the person
with whom you are concerned.

For researchers who take this question:
Such long-term facilities will be known,
in most locations, as "long-term residential"
"dual diagnosis" treatment centers, in the
parlance of the trade. My guess is that, since
the trend is toward "rapid therapies" and
managed-care treatment, that 6 months and
more may be a rarity, outside of centers
which are private and only accept full-coverage
insurance. Even these have been on the decline,
since managed-care has stepped in.
Public centers are more likely to expect
completion in 2-3 months, seeing any more than
that as a poor outcome.

Another bonus would be to find a "young adult"
program, which would focus more on the issues
related to a 20 year-old's agegroup, but these
are increasingly rare, as well.

Suggestion: See your local Telephone Directory for the Office of
Subsatnce Abuse and /or other facsimlarly in your locality. They will
usuall have a 800 toll free number. They can give you a list they have
localy ( as ordered by mandate to do because they give them monies )
or outside of your area if preferred with a little research on their
part. They can also tell you who to contact and length and cost if
low income you may have to meet certain criteria to get on a sliding
fee scale for services.
