Hello, simonr-ga,

The extensive market data you want covering the 10-20 top-ranking
skin care brands in the UK is only available for a fee. One site,
Euromonitor International, offers reports on market profiles by
industry for countries around the world. As you can see on their
website at http://www.euromonitor.com/results_industry.asp?icode=ct ,
you can order a specific report on the skin care product market in the
UK for $198 USD. That price might be worth it for you. If not, the
following information is a start:

According to the June 2002 issue of Skin Care Forum, the leading
skin care product brands in the UK by market share are as follows:
   Olay 30%
   Plenitude 11% (approximately)
   Nivea 10%
   Synergie 9% (approximately)
   Simple 7%
   PH5.5 3.5% (approximately)
   Vichey 2.5% (approximately)
   Ponds 2.5% (approximately)
The article has this interesting excerpt about the Simple brand:
“Some things in marketing are not as simple as they look. And
Accantia’s Simple skincare range in UK is one of them! This quietly
elegant brand contains no fragrance and no artificial colouring, as
the packs say “Not perfumed, not coloured, just nice!”… “Owned by
Accantia Health & Beauty Ltd - itself the result of a management
buy-out of Smith & Nephew’s UK toiletry business – the Simple brand is
the result of some very carefully listening. Listening by its
marketing management to what different segments of consumers were
saying about what they wanted from their skincare, what they liked and
what they did not…” “The result has been a mainstream brand holding 7%
of the entire UK facial skincare category – and still fragrance-free.
It takes very careful listening to make such a platform mainstream,
not niche, yet Accantia’s marketing team have achieved it by skilful
use of market research.
View charts and read the article “Local brands can hold their own in
European skincare,” by Colin Hession. Skin Care Forum Online (June
2002) at http://www.scf-online.com/english/29_e/localbrands29_e.htm

When I searched the site at
http://www.scf-online.com/english/29_e/localbrands29_e.htm , I typed
in the terms “UK skin care brand rankings,” but most information was
focused on a particular product, or information covering Europe as a
whole. You might want to try typing in your own search terms to refine
it, especially if you want information on a particular brand.

Other searches on Google led to brand-specific websites, or
e-commerce sites selling the “top brands” available in the UK.
However, this is very site specific, and not objective. If you truly
want more information, I suggest you buy the report mentioned above,
if it is within your price range.

I also tried searching specific product brands by marketshare within
the UK. However, your question is very broad. Since each brand offers
a large variety of various skin care products, by gender, by category,
etc., you might want to refine your search according to types of
product within a brand. Therefore, the above article in Skin Care
Forum Online was the most comprehensive, according to brand as an
overall search category.

I hope this helps! Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
