Question ID: 68566
I have a Dell Insperion laptop with Windows 2000 and Office XP Professional.
At my desk at work, I use a LaserJet 1100. At home, I have a Brother
MFL Pro Printer which is also a fax machine. Getting printer drivers
for the Brother - that Window's 2000 will allow - seems to be some
sort of a problem.

As it is now, when I want to use my laptop at home, I have to make the
Brother the default printer and have the printer cable plugged in
before I boot up the computer. IF I do this, and say my prayers - a
lot of the time, I will get all sorts of looking for driver messages
but. . . eventually, it will print. Sometimes, it will not cooperate
at all.

Do you know how I can get drivers for the Brother that Windows will
recognize and install? (If I am not asking the right question. .
please forgive me. I know how to turn a computer on, click on icons
and PRAY.) All the other printers I have to use work just fine but
the Brother is mine and I would like to get it working with this
computer. (works wonderfully with a computer that has Windows 98 on
it) I am putting this into the Software category but if it belongs
somewhere else, could one of you guys tell me?

Do you know the exact model number of your printer? Should be
something like MFC-xxxx. You'll probably see it somewhere on the
front, but you might have to look on the back of it.

I believe that it is the 4550 Plus - but I will check the back when I
get home tonight. Thanks for asking.

The Brother printer label says Mo. MFC4550A S/NM73806360.

I really hope you can help me find some printer drivers that will
support or be supported by Windows 2000. I am keeping my fingers
crossed because it is a great fax/printer. Thanks again for any help
you guys can give me. (If this is not the number or numbers you need
- I will look further but you will need to tell me where to look)

Hiya schmooz-ga,

You can download the printer driver directly from the Brother website,
at

http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/info/mfc/mfc4550plus.html

If this doesn't work, there are several other sites which have the
same driver available for free download.

http://www.printer-drivers.com/drivers/3/3150.htm

or

http://www.sensiblethings.com/driver_download/brother/mfc.html

All these sites recommend you uninstall the existing Brother drivers
before reinstalling, and the Brother site has clear instructions on
how do do this.

http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/uninstall.htm

Hope this fixes your dilemma!

Thanks for the help. I had called Brother and they told me that
drivers for my printer were not supported by or through Windows 2000.
Also, thanx for the tip about un-installing the old drivers. It was
very hard but works great now!!!!
