Blucken,

I have found the size of the market, but not find the top suppliers as
listed, say in an industry report. The reason for this may be that
producers of antibacterial additives/actives/agents make numerous
specialty chemicals for numerous industries.

I wonder if you would be satisfied with a listing I can make on my own
from business databases of those maufacturers/producers/suppliers of
antibaterial particles that go into soap/detergine/medicines. It may
be clear to you which the key one are from this listing.

Dear Blucken,

I continued to search this industry, and I have found the following
information.

The antibacterial particle market was about $33million in 1996, and
about $53million in 2001. From all the reading, I pulled out the
major players and include the following.

Lonza Group
Ciba Specialty Chemicals
Bayer AG
Dow Chemical
Angus Chemical
Amfine Chemicals
Yamagishi Shoji

Others that may be involved, with high degree of certainty are
Clariant
Rohm&Haas
BASF

The following are some citations that support what I’ve summarized.

-----------------------------------

“Gillian Morris, Manager, Chemicals, for the Kline Group, says
preservatives, antibacterials, and anti-dandruff ingredients accounted
for approximately $130 million to $135 million in sales last year. As
the author of Kline Group's study, Speciality Raw Materials for
Cosmetics and Toiletries USA 2000, she says that 35 percent of this
amount results from preservatives, 40 percent from antibacterials, and
the remainder from anti-dandruff chemicals, such as zinc pyrithione.”
…
“Although bezethonlum chloride, manufactured by Lonza Group and
others, is used in bar soaps, sanitizers, and waterless hand gels,
Triclosan continues to be the hands up antimicrobial of choice in many
of these products.
Ciba Specialty Chemicals, has been making triclosan for more than 30
years and is the largest producer.”

“Several marketing studies and talks with suppliers point to increased
demand for disinfectant chemicals used in both institutional and
industrial consumer markets. According to a report by the Freedonia
Group, demand for disinfectant chemicals used in consumer markets is
predicted to advance 3.5 percent/yr. to 71 million lbs. in 2005,
valued at $94 million. The analysts say gains will reflect increased
use in household products, including liquid soaps, laundry detergents,
and hard surface cleaners for the home.”

“US consumption of preservatives, bacteriostats (antimicrobial agents)
and antidandruff agents in 1996 totaled $130 million, with a total
volume of 15 million pounds, and growth at about 3 percent annually,
notes Gillian Morris, manager of chemicals, with Kline & Co., a
Fairfield, N.J.-based business consultancy. Preservative products
account for roughly half of the total consumption, with bacteriostats
and antidandruff agents comprising approximately 25 percent each of
the remaining consumption. Nearly half of these products find their
end uses in the hair care sector of the market, with 35 percent going
into toiletries, 14 percent into skin care, and 1 percent into color
cosmetics.”
…
“Leading bacteriostats for antimicrobial products include Ciba-Geigy's
triclosan and triclocarban manufactured by Bayer AG and Nipa
Hardwicke.”
