Last autumn I read a news article about the result of a study that
showed that for many of the people who jump from the upper floors of a
building on fire, the ground appears to be not very far down (because
of their psychological state) and therefore they think they won't be
killed by jumping. I asked a PhD in psychology about this and he
confirmed it.

I'd like to see a peer reviewed article in a reputable pub about this
phemomenon.

"I'd like to see a peer reviewed article in a reputable pub about this

Of course, I don't expect to be able to read the article on the web.
Just the bibliographical reference will do.

This may or may not be what you are looking for but this article talks
about some of the psychological aspects of those that jump
from tall buildings:

study of survivors
