Hi row1-ga I was searching for an answer to your question and today I received this: " We should have this information somewhere. I am still looking for this. I do not believe anyone else anywhere in the United States would have this information. We have several different places to look, and I have not checked them all. It might be a while before I get back to you, but I will do my best to get you an answer. " I see that your question has expired and I wanted to know if you plan to repost it because if you do I will more energically pursue this lead. Let me know by adding a comment here Thank you Silviares |

Please let me clarify the question. I'm looking for the street address of the WAC (Womens' Army Corps) BILLETS in Vienna. NOT THE ADDRESS OF THE U.S FORCES IN AUSTRIA, (that would be the Headquarters) yes,I would still like the information on the WAC billets. |

I don't know if this is a duplication to an earlier posting, but, yes, I still would like to have the street address of the WAC billet in Vienna,Austria. Not the street address of US Forces in Austria (USFA) as shown in the Subject. USFA address was in the Austrian Nat'l Bank Bldg. Thanks for your efforts ! |

Hello row1-ga I am trying to find the address of the WAC (Womens' Army Corps) billets in Vienna for you. I have contacted several places but only one replied to me. The one that replied though had good news because they said that they should have the information somewhere. Because they have several different places to look it might be a while before they get back to me. When they get back to me I should be able to provide you with an answer. However your question here has expired as of Oct 25th so I would be unable to post an answer here. If you are still interested in the answer you should repost the question. You should repost exactly the same question so it would be easy for me to find it. Let me know if something is not clear. I'll keep you posted on my findings Silviares |

For Missy - Nov 14,2002. Glad you are still with this. The best I can do is describe this building, and work on the tips Dr.Prigl offered. (his letter to me is enclosed herewith). The Wac billet was a 1 story building, seperate from other buildings. It was on a cul-de-sac with much greenery. The first floor was made of glass blocks and the second floor had a wrought iron balcony overlooking the first floor. Before the WAC occupied the building it was used as housing for S.S.Troops. The 2nd floor had dormatory-style rooms. Dr.Prigl mentioned the Wac detachment commander was locted at Bauernfeldgasse 40, in the 19th bezirk. That address sounds very familiar to me, but the women were never apart from the commander. I was there from June 1946 to July 1948. Perhaps, after I left the Wac were moved to the Cottage Hotel, with the commmander staying behind At Bauernfeldgasse 40. It has also been mentind that at that time (1946-19438) USFA leased real estate from the Austrian government. Maybe if your friend could visit the Bauernfeldgasse 40, 19 bezirk address and verify my description, that would be the answer. Dear Mrs. SMITH! Mr. Elkins have sent me your e-mail. I am from Vienna and my hobby is the history of the Americans in Austria and Vienna from 1945 to 1955. The address of the Bank Building is now Otto Wagner Platz. The street before the building is the Alser Strasse in the 9th district of Vienna. I send you a picture from the building today. In 1949 the 7692 WAC Detachment have the Cottage Hotel in the Sternwartestrasse 74 in the 18th district. I dont have apicture but it is no problem to make one for you. the Detachment Commander was in the Bauernfeldgasse 40 in the 19th district. I hope this was a help for you. Many greetings from Vienna from Hubert Prigl |

A postscript to my earlier message. Nov 14, 2002 In my browsing I learned the 796 MP.Company "A", had responsibility for the Wac detachment security. Perhaps their records would reveal the address. |
