Hello,
I was able to locate most of the information you requested. Some of
the information you need is not on the Web but I have given you phone
numbers of places that should be able to provide you with the
information I did not find.
Young Adults and Suicide
The American Association of Suicidology has a chart on its Web site
with suicide statistics for 25 to 34 year-olds going back to 1990:
http://www.suicidology.org/index.html
Once at the Web page, select the link marked USA Suicide: Official
Final Data. This will open up a PDF file which requires Acrobat Reader
to read. You will see the table on the bottom of the one page report.
To see 2000 suicide data go to the following Web page on the National
Center for Health Statistics Web site and select the link under
Comprehensive Data:
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/suicide.htm
I found these statistics by searching for for the terms Suicide,
Trends, United States on Google.
There does not appear to be suicide data going back before 1990 on the
Web. However you might find older statistics looking at the links
listed on the Suicide information section of the National Center for
Health Statistics Web site:
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/suicide.htm
If that does not work, I suggest contacting the National Center for
Disease Control at(800) 311-3435.
Young Adults and Alcoholism
The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
compiles statistics on alcoholism.
In 1995, the institute published statistics on the number of people
suffering from alcoholism. The findings were reported in volume 18,
issue 3 of the institutes journal Alcohol Health & Research World.
This issue of Alcohol Health & Research World is not online but can be
ordered from the NIAAA at 1-800-553-6847.
A press release about the 1995 report noted that, As in earlier
surveys, alcohol use disorder rates were higher among males than
females and highest in the youngest age cohort (18-29 years)."
http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/press/1995/nlaes.htm
I searched throughout the NIAAA Web site and could not find more
recent figures on alcoholism. I suggest contacting the NIAAA at the
number above and asking about the 1995 study and more recent studies.
Young Adults and Eating Disorders
The National Institute of Mental Health conducts research on eating
disorders. The Institute's Web site ( http://www.nimh.nih.gov )
contains many reports on eating disorders but not the statistics you
need. I suggest contacting the institute at(301) 443-4513 to see
whether they can point you to the statistics you are looking for.
I hope all this is helpful and don't hesitate to ask me for
clarification.
Best regards, The Friendly Librarian |
