Here is a recent estimate from a reliable source (Sporting Goods
Intelligence is a leading supplier of market information for the
sporting goods industry). Would this be satisfactory as an answer?

"The numbers that were given at the Running USA Conference by Mark
Sullivan of Sporting Good[s] Intelligence were that there were about
600 Running Specialty Stores in the Country grossing about 600 Million
in Sales."
