I've currently configured an excel worksheet with drop down menus for
my work that I see as potentially useful to others in my field and I
was wondering can this tool i've created can be either patented or
copyrighted? (There are no real magical or creative mathematical
formulas in this spreadsheet only a uniquely functional architecture
for entering and presenting data ie. billing/charges etc).

There are hundreds more!

Some of these are patents for the basic functions of spreadsheets,
themselves, but others are clearly 'architectures' for particular
spreadsheet functions, such as #40, "Method for controlling the order
of editing cells in a spreadsheet by evaluating entered next cell
attribute of current cell".

From this list, it would seem that your worksheet has, at least, a
reasonable shot at being patented.

Does this information answer your question? If not, what additional
information would you like to make for a complete answer?

Best of luck,

Hi,
I do not think this could be patented. Even if it were full of
mathematical formulas - they too cannot be patented.
The architecure itself can be probably registered if it is a unique
software product. Anyway - ask a professional!

I disagree. If you created functionality that is new (not done
before), it can be patented. If the spreadsheet carries an algorithm
that is new, or is new in context (e.g. describes a new way of
evaluating a real world problem), it can be patented. The patent would
probably describe the invention outside of the medium of the
spreadsheet.
