I've downloaded the latest windows media, the latest quicktime,
downloaded DivX and some other codec things like Xvid or w/e,
downloaded shockwave, flash, all that jazz. Video's still don't play
unless I download them, which is unfortunate because a lot of the
video's I want to watch I can't download due to no link etc. Quicktime
movies work, and most videos on video.google work, but the video's
that I really want to watch don't. An example video would be at
http://media.putfile.com/GladzMarch1, and other videos included are my
own videos on www.gladzcam.com. All of these videos worked previous to
my formatting, but another possible cause that could use a solution is
the fact that the LAN settings may have changed slighty as a new
computer was also added to the computer network, though I dont imagine
that to be the problem as quicktime videos and such still work. The
version of windows media that I am using is the latest, version 10 I
believe. I don't know what to do and the mix of information I get in
my own google searches brings up a lot of other peoples problems that
are more complicated then my own when all I need is the simple answer.
Please help ASAP!

I use both the latest version of Internet Explorer, and Mozilla
Firefox, neither work, and I use Windows XP Pro.

rawtratrick...

Oddly enough, I am still using WMP 6.4, and can view the
videos at http://media.putfile.com/GladzMarch1 with no
problems, embedded in the browser.

I suspect grthumongous-ga is correct in assessing this
as a codec problem.

Ahhh, still doesn't work!
I visited http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx#6.4
and it had a note that said "If you do not have Windows Media Player 9
Series or later installed and cannot play content by using the Windows
Media Video 9 or Windows Media Audio 9 Voice codecs from a Player
embedded in a Web page, consider downloading the codec installation
package for Windows Media Player 6.4 as well." So I downloaded it and
the other one, on top of that I downloaded 2 different MPEG-2 codecs,
and still nothing working.

This is turning out to be more complicated then I originally thought,
could anyone please compare my list of codecs with their own?

http://gladzcam.com/Codecs.txt <-- those are my saved codecs, out of
all those, what do you have that I don't have?

I spent a month in codec heck and eventually had to re-format so I
know how you feel.

In you question you do not specify with sufficient precision what type
of video content you are attempting to play. Some content do not
require codecs, but most do. There are also multiple players that
*may* play similar types of content--but each wanting to use a
different codec.

For example, current (b*g-filled) versions of Roxio and Nero include
their own video players, each of which use their own codecs.
Microsoft's own WMP v10
is capable of playing DVDs but incredibly does not come packaged with
an MPEG2 codec to actualy work. The user is supposed to obtain/buy a
DVD codec from
a vendor like Intervideo (WindDVD) or others.

Even if you have such a codec there seems to be no easy and reliable
method for determining which codecs are actually being used during a
particular file play-back. I have eXPerienced (ugh) non-deterministic
effects where a file played back with different codecs on the same
player.

I came to the frustrating conclusion that XP Pro codec architecture
and instrumentation is crummy.

Consider the following tools which may be of use to your diagnostics efforts.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=DE1491AC-0AB6-4990-943D-627E6ADE9FCB&displaylang=en

This tool allows you to display what video codecs *might* used with
WMP v10, and to set one codec as the "preferred" codec---something
you would want to do but would only do if you actually had a *WMP v10
compatible* codec installed

There is aslo something called Sherlock the Codec detective, an
amazing peice of freeware that ferrets out all the video and audio
codecs lurking on your machine. You can save the output to a TXT
file. Once saved, you can print or email to tech support.
