I am a high school student and I am attending a youth leadership conference this summer. Tuition for the conference is about $2,500 and right now I am trying to fundraise. I don't have a car and I am too young for a job so I am having to be creative with my fundraising efforts. Presently I am at a loss. My question is: What are goods ways for an unemployable teen to make money? This is what I have tried so far: - Website. I created a blog with details about my trip and ways I am trying to make money. On the site I have a link for visitors to donate to my PayPal account and I am using Adsense. The site has produced some money but not nearly enough despite me "getting the word out". You can see it at www.helpmetodc.com - eBay Business. In the past I have sold things for others on eBay (baby clothes, collectibles, etc.) but I did not make a considerable amount of money because I was working on a commission and not receiving all the profit. I also tried using drop shipping services but I was only able to make a few dollars (if anything) per sale. I am out of ideas for things to sell on eBay as I don't have anything I want to get rid of. - Tutoring. I have been tutoring a fellow student but I am having trouble getting the word out to get new students. -Asking for donations. I have been mailing local businesses to tell them about myself and what I am trying to do but most businesses turn me down because I am not a certified non-profit organization. I am looking for some advice as to what course of action I should take next. Thanks |

Depending on the state, you could still work at a farm stand. In NJ, youcan have any non-hazardous job at a farm stand. (i.e.cashier, helper, cart person, etc.) Thats the job all the young folks go for. Otherwise its atough spot to be. People like giving to good causes, but ur just tryng to externalize your costsfor yourown benefit. Does exactly tug at the heart strings. |

Donations: You might talk to service organizations such as Rotary, Lions Club. You should be prepared to present your "case" to them: what you are going to get out of the conference and how it will help you, what you are doing to help finance it, perhaps also considering offering to speak to the group after the conference, telling the members why it was a benefit for you and the youth group. Alternatively, the service organizations or the members might be able lend you part of the money, allowing you more time to earn it than you have till summer. Good luck! |
