I have acquired two paintings one is a ballerina oil on canvas signed M. Schweitzer '41, we believe it may be "Mac" Scweitzer (Alice) but the signature is hard to track to see another illustration of her works. Also a German Village with a Merrill Chase Galleries Certificate of Authenticity, the signature says "Janos" as does the COA. Since Janos Kardos did landscapes and was originally from Hungary, we are thinking it might be him. I have listed these pieces on eBay with this information but I think our price would far exceed if I could know for sure on these two beauties. Help Anyone? Link to my ebay auctions, Janos link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7393756225&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1 Schweitzer Link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7393755902&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1 |

With all brutal honesty, someone who painted the Ballerina in 1941 was probably not much of a famous artist, because the style was dead for 40 years then. Have you checked the "Janos" signature against known paintings by Kardos (i.e., in museums)? This mgiht be the easiest way to confirm your feeling. |

Howdy tammyand-ga, Based on the subject matter and the signature I don't think the painting of the ballerina would be a work by Mac Schweitzer. Here is an example of her signature, and from other references it appears she signed pieces with the "full" name of Mac Schweitzer. http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIGINAL-Drawing-by-MAC-SCHWEITZER-Tucson-AZ_W0QQitemZ7379078848QQcategoryZ552QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem But, as she was at art school at the time, perhaps yours was a class project. |
